DESIGN NAME: Cappuccino set
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Porcelain cup and saucer
INSPIRATION: Most of my inspiration came from looking at natural shapes such as leaves and exotic plants. I wanted to translate the line fluidity found in nature into a desirable glossy porcelain piece.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A cappuccino cup and saucer set with a unique, distinguished and eye-catching design for coffee breaks. The idea behind this project was to create a desirable, high quality product that would reflect local craftsmanship excellence with design sensitivity. Each piece is made of hand molded porcelain in a local Montreal ceramic workshop.
The cappuccino set features a 6oz. cup with a minimalist straight handle and an interesting saucer with a define cup placement area and dimensions to allow snack space. The cups and saucers are stackable and design to fit most standard espresso machines
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The minimalist straight cup handle is a great alternative to regular cup handles and forces users to drink slower. The saucer dimensions and design allow the space to add a snack treat to the coffee; an appreciated touch to complete the experience. The saucer shaped like a water drop allow an ergonomic, easy and practical way to carry around the set and also this same water drop like shape is reflected in the cup’s interior and allow baristas or cappuccino enthusiasts a chance to design interesting frothed milk shapes!
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2010, the product development was completed in December 2010 and the fabrication started in January 2011. The entire project was executed in Montreal, Canada.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A wood model for each piece was made by CNC to cast a first prototype mold. The final products are made of porcelain cooked at 1250°C, each piece is handcrafted in plaster molds and is one of a kind with all the beauty and irregularity of a handcrafted product. The ceramist carefully sands and treats each piece to match the design and to assure high structural and surface quality. The final result is a glossy, smooth and easy to clean finish that is microwave and dishwasher safe.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Cup dimensions: 5” (128mm) x 3.75” (95mm) x 2.5” (64mm)
Saucer dimensions: 6.75” (170mm) x 6” (150mm) x 1” (25mm)
Each cappuccino set comes in a recyclable cardboard box and is protected by transparent recyclable plastic bubble wrap.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I studied the users’ interaction when drinking coffee alone or with friends as well as existing cup and saucer designs in order to get the big pictures of the competitors and future design. An ergonomic study was done on different cup handle prototypes to find the appropriate handle shape that would be well-adjusted to fingers and relatively easy to hold. We also fabricated a series of 5 different cup handles in order to survey series of potential users with their preference on handle finishes and shapes
CHALLENGE: Many fabrication challenges had to be overcome to consent the wanted design. The biggest difficulty met during this product development was the molding difficulties to fabricate a cup with an integrated handle. The ceramist technique had to be carefully dissected and applied in order to find the appropriate cup wall thickness and avoid pieces deformation during the finishing and the cooking process. We had to adjust the porcelain composition and pieces’ drying time to find the perfect combination for good strength and minimal heat deformations.
