DESIGN NAME: Compression Can
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Drinks Can
INSPIRATION: The oak cask barrel and the home delivered glass milk bottle (in the UK); it is used, then washed, refilled and then reused again.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This recyclable drinks can is designed with the environment in mind. A thin layer of liquid-proof membrane is squashed between a graphics carrying cardboard outer layer and an aluminium cap top and secured in place by means of a modified low-profile zip-tie mechanically attached at tension. When the retainer sleeve used to interface the zip-tie teeth is cut away (after it has served its purpose), the entire can falls apart into its separate components. All these parts are free of adhesive bonding so doesn't produce material contamination that interferes with the recycling process.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Compression Can is designed to be used in exactly the same ways as pre-existing conventional drinks cans and bottles, so that the user does not have to adopt any new practices or behaviours that could otherwise prove to be a deterrent. The design was created to be modular, giving it the potential to be adapted to fulfil other purposes, for example it can be modified to take on the role of rigid jars and be used to package cooking sauces and preserved foods. And at the end of its useful life it can then be easily compacted down and recycled without any extra hassle on the part of the consumer.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cast aluminium cap top and cap would be sent off for steam cleaning after use ready for reuse (a process that already happens with surgical utensils and with glass milk bottles in some countries). It is more economical to steam sterilise a container than to re-melt and re-form it at the end of its useful life. The cardboard casing can be made out of recycled paper and the thin layer of plastic can be separated and recycled with greater ease unlike current juice cartons where a liquid-proof film is bonded to the inside producing a difficult to separate composite substance.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: A key fact identified was that the traditional standard rigid drinks can or bottle regardless of whether it was full or empty, will take up the same amount of space on a truck when it is being transported. So the answer was to create a container that was delivered to the filling plant in flat-pack form and could be assembled onsite. Flat-packing would allow more new empty containers to be delivered in fewer trips. Another key consideration was the material contamination side-effect in some existing products; the solution was to design a product that could be fully and cleanly separated.
