DESIGN NAME: Teli Tiee
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Player
INSPIRATION: In modern society, with the increasing prevalence of inter-generational families, there is a growing need for effective communication channels between the elderly and children. Observing that the elderly often find solace in reminiscing about their past experiences, while children are naturally drawn to the vivid and imaginative world of picture-book stories, we were inspired to create Teli Tiee.We use emotional and inclusive design principles to complete the design and use AI to process the story content.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Teli Tiee is a story-player designed for intergenerational interaction between children and the elderly.
Equipped with three types of story elements blocks, the elderly and kids can listen colorful stories by combining different blocks. Stories come from system presets and elderly-shared ones. The elderly can share their stories or co-create new stories with kids. Recorded stories, processed by AI, are uploaded to the database and turned into illustrated stories for sharing.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When using the story machine, press the on key to start the device. According to the guidance, put story elements blocks into the groove, and the system senses and plays the story of the combination. Users can pull the lever to the right to switch to the next story, and to the left to record and upload their stories.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2023 in China and finished in August 2023 in China

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The methodology involved analyzing the needs of both groups through interviews and observations. Interviews were conducted with elderly people and children to understand their behaviors, preferences, and pain points in communication. Observation was also carried out in community settings where inter-generational interactions occurred. Research tools included questionnaires, voice recorders for interviews, and note-taking.
CHALLENGE: The primary creative and research challenge was to bridge the generational gap through a single product. Designing for two distinct user groups-the elderly with their need for self-expression and reminiscence, and children with their demand for engaging and educational play-required a delicate balance. Technologically, integrating AI for story processing and illustration generation while ensuring friendliness for non-tech-savvy users was a significant hurdle.
