| DESIGN NAME: Dongguan Zhongshuge Library PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interior Design INSPIRATION: The Dongguan Songshan Lake Science and Technology Industrial Park serves as a significant technological center in southern China and the nation at large, housing the headquarters of many technology firms, including Huawei, along with their production and research and development facilities. Additionally, the park features advanced research institutions such as the Spallation Neutron Source Laboratory, one of only four globally. The vibrant research and industrial environment of the park serves as a vital source of inspiration for the interior design of the bookstore. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Dongguan Zhongshuge Library, Dongguan is situated within the Dongguan Songshan Lake Science and Technology Industrial Park. The design of the bookstore is inspired by the distinctive characteristics of its location and architectural form, where magical and industrial gear elements as the central design language are found across various sections of the space. These sections include the main reading area, a children's reading area, and a coffee area, each exhibiting a unique style and maintaining a cohesive design throughout the overall aesthetic. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The children's reading area is inspired by the Spallation Neutron Source facility, featuring a distinctive indoor installation designed to deliver a technological experience that harmonizes with the local environment. This facility serves a dual purpose as an aesthetic element and a functional bookshelf, dividing the space into two separate reading areas. The cafe located on the second floor continues the industrial theme, presenting a factory-like ambiance through the use of lamps, tables, chairs, and large-scale installations that are seamlessly integrated into the overall design. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project design commenced in April 2023 and was successfully finalized by June 2023. Following its completion, the project was exhibited at the Songshan Lake Art District located in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, China. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The bookstore spans three floors, with the primary reading area located on the first to third floors. A corridor on the second floor links the left and right sections, which include a children reading area, a forum area, and a cultural and creative space on the right, while the left side features a coffee area. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 123 square metre TAGS: Interior Design, Bookstore, Magic, Technology, Industry RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The building is characterized by its petal shape, with a gradual elevation that shapes a natural viewing platform at the summit. From the rotating staircase leading to the top platform, the innovative design and efficient use of gear elements within the interior space contribute to a captivating and unique landscape. The gear elements serve as a decorative piece and a conventional bookcase, while the thoughtful arrangement of the interior allows users to access all areas where books are stored. CHALLENGE: The striking and abstract incorporation of gears in the corridor and Mid-store Island Section imparts a distinctly industrial yet enchanting atmosphere to the bookstore. The predominant use of wood in nearly all elements mitigates the coldness typically associated with traditional industrial design. The warm qualities of the wood foster a natural connection between the aesthetic and the intrinsic characteristics of the bookstore, fostering a fantastical environment that remains intact.
