RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The "RoseHeart Legacy" project is a design-led research endeavor, blending artistic creativity with technological innovation. It investigates how jewelry can go beyond decoration by weaving together beauty, emotion, and functionality, using traditional craftsmanship and modern tools to craft a piece that feels alive and personal.
Research Objectives
The goal was to create a jewelry piece that’s more than just stunning—it’s meaningful and interactive. We aimed to:
Capture the duality of purity (white rose with diamonds) and passion (red ruby) from the Snow-White and Rose-Red fairy tale.
Add a heartbeat sensor to connect the wearer’s emotions to the jewel.
Make it versatile, switching between a necklace and brooch for everyday use.
Methodology
We used a mixed-methods approach—part storytelling, part science:
Qualitative: Talking to people about what jewelry means to them emotionally.
Quantitative: Measuring how well the tech and design worked through surveys and tests.
Data Collection and Research Tools Used
Interviews: Chatted with jewelry lovers and designers about feelings tied to materials.
Surveys: Asked a wider group about multifunctional jewelry and tech features.
Prototyping: Built and tested early versions of the heartbeat sensor for comfort and accuracy.
Material Testing: Checked diamonds, ruby, and white gold for quality and ethical sourcing.
Participants or Experiments
Participants: 50 people—jewelry fans, fashion-forward folks, and tech enthusiasts—joined interviews, surveys, and tests.
Experiments: We tested prototypes to ensure the sensor worked and the design switched forms easily.
Results
Emotional Bond: 85% felt a deeper connection thanks to the heartbeat sensor—it’s like the jewel has a pulse.
Versatility: 92% loved that it could be a necklace or brooch, making it more wearable.
Symbolism: The diamond-ruby contrast hit home as purity and passion for nearly everyone.
Insights and Impacts
Personal Touch: The sensor makes it uniquely yours, boosting its emotional value.
Practicality: Switching forms makes it more useful and fun.
Storytelling: Materials can tell powerful stories when paired thoughtfully.
Effect of the Research in Real-Life Phenomena
Business: This could kick off a trend—luxury jewelry that’s personal and tech-savvy, drawing in buyers who want something special.
Society: It flips the script on jewelry as just “pretty,” pushing for pieces that mean something deeper.
Design Itself: Shows how tech can refresh classic design, inspiring more wearable art that interacts with us.
CHALLENGE: The design of the "RoseHeart Legacy" jewel was a creative and research-driven challenge that aimed to blend artistic tradition with technological innovation. It drew inspiration from the fairy tale Snow-White and Rose-Red. The primary challenge was to strike a balance between classic beauty and modern technology while capturing the story’s key symbols: fragility (represented by the white rose) and strength (represented by the red ruby).
Challenges and Solutions:
Symbolism: The white rose, crafted with 2.5 carats of diamonds to symbolize delicacy, and the 1.2-carat red ruby, symbolizing passion, were designed abstractly in 18K white gold to steer clear of overly traditional or clichéd interpretations.
Modern Appeal: A heart rate sensor was subtly integrated behind the rose, adding an emotional and contemporary touch to the piece.
Design: Through multiple iterations of sketches and 3D prototypes, the final design achieved a harmonious blend of classic elegance and modern simplicity.
Technology and Production: With the use of CAD modeling and collaboration with technical experts, the heart rate sensor was seamlessly incorporated without sacrificing the jewel’s aesthetics or wearer comfort.
Research: Literary scholars and historians were consulted to ensure the fairy tale’s symbols were accurately interpreted and reflected in the design.
