| DESIGN NAME: Chong Daybed PRIMARY FUNCTION: Daybed INSPIRATION: Inspired by the traditional bamboo hammock - a familiar sight in Vietnamese rural villages, Chong Daybed is not just a versatile piece of furniture but also a symbol of folk culture and family warmth. With its elegant design, close-to-nature appeal, and high functionality, Chong represents a connection from the past to the present, becoming a modern furniture piece while retaining the essence of Vietnamese life. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Chong Daybed is made from natural oak wood and microfiber leather, offering durability and comfort. The oak provides strength and a natural aesthetic, while the microfiber leather offers softness, ease of cleaning, and a modern look. The round wooden slats mimic the traditional bamboo joinery, connecting cleverly to create a sturdy structure. Each wooden slat serves not only as a load-bearing component but also as a decorative element, bringing balance and harmony to the overall design. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Chong Daybed is a versatile product designed for various uses such as resting, relaxing, and creating a gathering space for family and friends. This design not only provides comfort and convenience but also serves as an aesthetic highlight for both modern and traditional living spaces. Additionally, the daybed is designed with a horizontal bar at one end for hanging towels, books, or other convenient items, enhancing its usability in contemporary living spaces. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The product was launched in the end of 2023 after about 3 years of research and producing, and was exhibited in Heritage Journey in VIET KIA Showroom in September 2024. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Chong Daybed is produced with wooden slats assembled using mortise and tenon joints and screws, minimizing the use of adhesives to ensure environmental sustainability. The surface is made from microfiber leather, hand-woven by artisans, offering both elegance and durability. The disassemblable structure allows for easy movement and optimizes maintenance, making it easy to replace parts when necessary. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Chong Daybed measures 2100 mm x 850 mm x 500 mm. When disassembled, its components are packed in a 2200 mm x 300 mm x 300 mm box for safe transportation. Made of natural oak wood and microfiber leather, it consists of 20 independent parts, making it easy to assemble, transport, and maintain. Its modular design allows for individual component replacement, enhancing durability and adaptability to various living spaces. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research process began with studying the traditional bamboo chong in Vietnamese folk life, followed by experiments with sustainable materials such as oak wood and microfiber leather. Designers thoroughly researched the structure and function of the bamboo chong, while incorporating modern design principles to create a product that meets the flexible needs of contemporary living spaces. CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge in designing the Chong Daybed was preserving the traditional essence of the bamboo chong while applying modern design principles. Sema Desgin Studio tested seven different versions, facing issues such as instability, lack of sturdiness, and even frame breakage. Through continuous refinement, the structure was optimized to achieve high durability and stability. Disassemblable components and a modular assembly system were introduced to ensure flexibility and ease of maintenance while maintaining the traditional spirit of the bamboo chong in a modern design.
