PRIMARY FUNCTION: Shower Water Flosser
INSPIRATION: ARC was inspired by the desire to simplify daily routines and promote healthier habits. Combining the act of flossing with showering makes it easier to incorporate oral hygiene into a busy lifestyle. The goal was to create a seamless, time-saving solution that fits naturally into daily habits, making flossing more accessible and efficient without adding extra steps or hassle.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: ARC is an innovative shower water flosser designed to seamlessly integrate into your daily shower routine, making oral hygiene more convenient and efficient. By utilizing the existing water pressure from your shower hose, ARC eliminates the need for electricity or batteries, offering a sustainable and hassle-free solution for water flossing. Its ergonomic design includes a replaceable 4-way water stream head, ensuring thorough cleaning between teeth and along the gum line. Users can customize the water pressure to their preference, allowing for a gentle or more intensive flossing experience. When not in use, ARC can be neatly stored in its compact, moisture-resistant storage station, keeping it easily accessible while maintaining cleanliness. By incorporating water flossing into a familiar setting, ARC encourages consistency, making it easier to develop and maintain a healthy oral care routine.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To set up ARC, simply attach it to your shower hose. The water pressure from your shower powers the flosser, and the adjustable settings allow you to customize the water flow for a personalized experience. Press the multi-function button to switch between different water streams, and glide the floss head along your teeth for a thorough clean. The device can be easily stored in the compact, moisture-resistant storage station when not in use.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2024 and finished in May 2024.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The ARC water flosser is built with durable, moisture-resistant materials, including ABS plastic for the housing and a silicone water seal to prevent water damage. The 4-way water stream head is made of BPA-free plastic and soft rubber for a comfortable and effective flossing experience. It's assembled using injection molding. The device functions using minimal energy, relying on the water pressure from your shower.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Type of Research: Design research with an emphasis on user behavior and product functionality
Research Objectives: To create an easy and sustainable oral care solution
Methodology: User interviews, market analysis, competitor product testing to identify pain points in string flossing and water flossing
Data Collection: Interviewed some friends and family members on their own experience of flossing. Collected product reviews online on each type of flossing device.
Results: Insights revealed that shower-use water flosser is convenient to use, space-saving, requires no charging, more affordable and thus is a more appealing option for those who prioritize those benefits
Insights and Impacts: The research validated the need for a product that saves time and reduces the complexity of flossing, ultimately promoting healthier oral care habits
Effect on Real-Life Phenomena: ARC's design addresses the growing demand for time-saving, environmentally-friendly solutions in personal care, positively impacting consumers and medical and hospitality industries.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was designing the mouthpiece to be both comfortable and effective with the water stream technology. I used myself as a test subject, experimenting with different shapes and looking at mouthguard designs for inspiration. I also prototyped various designs using 3D printing to test the fit and comfort. The goal was to create a mouthpiece that allowed the water to reach all areas of the mouth without discomfort or splashing, ensuring a smooth and effective flossing experience.
