| DESIGN NAME: Thorn Metamorphosis PRIMARY FUNCTION: Product Animation INSPIRATION: Inspired by nature’s metamorphosis, Thorn Lighting transforms sharp thorns into light, symbolizing strength and beauty. Thorns, representing resilience and growth through adversity, serve as metaphors for spiritual evolution. Blending their raw edge with industrial lines, Thorn strikes a balance between harshness and softness, light and shadow. It reflects the human journey of finding beauty and hope in challenges, merging nature’s wild spirit with modern aesthetics and functionality. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Over time, nature’s forms are shaped by human hands into industrial products. While this transformation sped up with the Industrial Revolution, the organic structures of nature continue to inspire design. Thorn Lighting transforms the thorn, one of nature’s harshest forms, into a modern design object. This process reflects the evolution into a functional product, while maintaining the wild and unique beauty of nature. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The cinematic was created to showcase the origin story of Thorn in an elegant and self-explanatory way. Its purpose is to take the audience on a small journey of transformation. The video is intended to be shared on social platforms and during events to create attraction around the product. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started simultaneously in New York and Ankara in September 2023 and was completed in July 2024. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Thorn’s cinematic was created using Houdini and rendered with Redshift on dual RTX 4090 GPUs. Final renders were composited in Nuke, edited in After Effects, and color graded in DaVinci Resolve. Starting from CAD data, Houdini’s procedural tools shaped its organic transformation. Vellum simulations drove the metamorphosis, while anamorphic CG cameras and lighting enhanced its cinematic feel. Product photos provided key references to achieve realistic material properties in the animation. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The video was exported as an MP4 file, 16:9 aspect ratio, 3072x1728 resolution with H.264 compression at 24 FPS. A high quality MOV export is also available without as much compression but larger file size. TAGS: Thorn, Lighting, Nature, Metamorphosis, Transformation, Vfx, 3D, Cgi, Animation, Organic RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The effects of seasonal changes on nature were researched. Realistic seed, thorn, and leaf models were created, observing their wind-driven movements. 3D modeling was done based on the product's components. Multiple tests ensured accurate material textures. To capture true lighting and colors, recordings were made in various environments. A special composition was crafted to narrate the metamorphosis in sync with the animation. CHALLENGE: Creating the right composition for this animation about the transformation of nature into an industrial lighting product was a challenge. It was a real challenge to model and synchronize the scenes that reflect the reality of nature, while at the same time harmonizing with the specially prepared music and conveying the intended emotions to the audience in an effective and cinematographic way.
