DESIGN NAME: Technology Museum
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exhibition Hall
INSPIRATION: In the design process of the new building of Henan Science and Technology Museum, the design team drew inspiration from historical culture, natural forms, modern technology, and cooperation in different fields. They also deepened the spatial modeling of the design, learned from the transformation from Auto CAD to Rhino visualization modeling software, and provided references for similar projects. The application of new materials and processes, cooperation in different fields, and the stimulation of design inspiration.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The new building of Henan Science and Technology Museum is a large-scale and high investment public welfare project in Henan Province in recent years. It is located on the banks of Xianghu Lake in Zhengdong New District, Zhengzhou City, with a total investment of more than 2 billion yuan and a total construction area of about 110000 square meters. It is a public welfare project that spreads science and technology, enhances the scientific quality of citizens, and expands the practice of science education for young people. It is a new landmark of the provincial capital Zhengzhou. In November 2023, the project was selected for the second batch of China Construction Engineering Luban Award (National Quality Engineering) for 2022-2023.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The duration of project deepening design is relatively short, and the on-site measurement and modeling workload involved in interior design and equipment installation are large. Multiple technical means are used to collaborate among various professions to complete the deepening design. During the implementation of the project, the deepening design personnel were not afraid of difficulties, dared to undertake tasks, completed the project, and achieved the effects in the design scheme, achieving the reasonable application of spatial layout planning.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The new building project of Henan Science and Technology Museum is located north of Jinshui Avenue, east of Jinxiu Road, and southwest corner of Xianghu in Baisha Xianghu Planning Area, Zhengdong New District, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province. The interior decoration construction started in early 2019 and was completed and put into trial operation on June 1, 2022 in Baisha Xianghu Planning Area, Zhengdong New District, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province. It officially opened on November 12, 2024.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In terms of production implementation technology, there are technical difficulties in the main space, such as the high ceiling height of the atrium, complex wall and roof shapes, and traditional methods that cannot measure irregular shapes. The application of BIM technology improves work efficiency by using a total station for data measurement. After completing the three-dimensional coordinates, the data is imported into Rhino software to draw models, which can solve the problems of anodizing curved aluminum plates, prefabricated concrete corrugated plate shapes, as well as designing and creating various line and surface shapes. By adjusting the size and shape of the model through parametric modeling, the design scheme can be optimized.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: In terms of technical features, prefabricated concrete corrugated board materials are applied to the walls, corridors, and other public areas of the atrium. The usable area exceeds 10000 square meters, and the size of the panels varies depending on the size of the space. Most specifications are ultra long and ultra wide, using dry hanging technology. The back frame steel structure is made of grade steel, and the zigzag shaped skeleton is divided into wall mounted hot-dip galvanized steel pipe keel and surface layer keel. The detailed construction drawings clearly indicate the dimensions, materials, processes, and other information to ensure the accuracy and standardization of construction.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Deepen the design to achieve measurement and layout of decoration components, factory processing, use Rhino models to achieve 3D virtual reality rendering of indoor wall and ceiling shapes, accurately layout curved aluminum plates, provide a basis for factory processing of aluminum plate materials, and assemble on-site construction. The basic process includes deepening design planning, on-site measurement, modeling, layout, review and verification, ordering, factory processing, grassroots construction, surface installation and other processes.
CHALLENGE: The most difficult part of deepening the design is the implementation of the broken line shape on the third and fourth floor walls of the atrium. It is a novel aspect of the design of the atrium space in the science museum. Unlike the flat effect of the first and second floor walls, it is an irregular continuous three-dimensional broken line shape formed by stainless steel plates and white prefabricated concrete corrugated plates. Rhino software solves the layout of the discounted shape. In addition to technical challenges, it also overcomes the cold winter weather, heavy workload for on-site deepening design, tight time requirements, and short construction period.
