DESIGN NAME: Sphere
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Vase
INSPIRATION: The Iconic Home vases combine innovative manufacturing, aesthetic design and sustainability. Precise 3D printing creates filigree structures with a unique depth effect that conventional techniques cannot achieve. Made from bio-based PLA and with an energy-efficient manufacturing process, they are not only visually impressive, but also environmentally friendly - a perfect interplay of technology, design and sustainability.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Sphere vases by Iconic Home become objects with an extraordinary depth effect. Depending on the incidence of light, the vases can be rediscovered from every angle. The iconic vase is elaborately manufactured in the company's own design factory in Germany using a 3D printing process from bio-based PLA. The complex manufacturing process for a single vase takes up to 15 hours.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The vases are not only suitable for fresh flowers, but also for dried flowers and as room fragrance diffusers. Thanks to a special manufacturing technique, the vases are water-resistant and robust - ideal for versatile use in the home.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: It took around a year from the initial development to the finished production of the Iconic Home vases. After an intensive design and test phase, the official market launch took place in November 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Sphere vase is made from bio-based PLA using an innovative 3D printing process. Depending on the size, it takes between 5 and 15 hours to produce each vase. Production is carried out sustainably using self-generated PV electricity, which minimises the carbon footprint. The waterproof inner container made of 3D-printed polypropylene is not only durable, but also 100% recyclable, which further emphasises the vase's environmental friendliness.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Sphere Size S: 162 mm x 162 mm x 200 mm
Sphere Size M: 211 mm x 211 mm x 260 mm
Sphere Size L: 260 mm x 260 mm x 320 mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In our design research-based study for the development of the Iconic Home vases, we investigated bio-based PLA as a renewable material. The aim was to realise a vase with an extraordinary depth effect using iterative prototypes and experimental 3D printing processes. We optimised the 3D design with material analyses, expert feedback and test groups. The results promote sustainable design, economic innovation and social acceptance of environmentally friendly products.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was realising the complex 3D print design for the large-format Sphere vase. In addition to internal factors such as historical design development and social demands, we had to develop a 15-hour printing process that would work seamlessly from the first to the last second. External factors such as legal requirements, production possibilities and technological limitations required innovative solutions in order to realise a high-quality, functional end product.
