| DESIGN NAME: Fan PRIMARY FUNCTION: Control Terminal INSPIRATION: The design inspiration for this smart switch panel comes from the ancient literati who used folding fans to express etiquette and emotions. The folding fan was not just an essential accessory in social gatherings for scholars but also symbolised cultural refinement. The design team has integrated it with smart home technology, showcasing aesthetics and cultural significance. It communicates the taste of the user and sophistication, merging the charm of traditional culture with modern technology. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Fanora is a smart switch panel that integrates modern smart home technology with high end home decor art, adopting the shape of a folding fan to achieve smart control functions. It combines traditional Chinese aesthetics with technology. It not only carries the cultural connotations and emotional expressions of the folding fan as an element of Chinese tradition but also features robust appliance control, scene customisation, and environmental adaptability, balancing beauty and functionality. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Fanora can be used as a wall-mounted or desktop display, supporting customisation of the Hetian jade pendant shape to meet needs for personalisation and aesthetics. With sensors embedded within the pendant, Fanora can auto adjust lighting and air conditioning given real time conditions, offering a personalised comfort space. Moreover, Fanora includes a Scene Capture where users can long press the scene button to save the current settings, enabling one-click restoration of the ideal setting. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was designed and developed in Guangzhou in June 2023 and launched in China in October 2024. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Digital and Electronic Device Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The main body of Fanora is crafted from 6063 aluminium alloy, finished with sandblasting and anodising processes. Its pendant is made from natural Hetian jade, polished by artisan level craftsmanship for both beauty and texture. The panel is equipped with eight buttons processed by CNC technology. The button curvature follows ergonomic principles, making pressing effortless and comfortable, with a fine sand textured surface that effectively prevents fingerprint residue. Therefore, the design team aimed to integrate the elements of the folding fan into the smart switch panel design, creating a smart home product that embodies the features of traditional Chinese aesthetics and provides users with a comfortable living experience. CHALLENGE: The challenge lies in combining the intricate structure of traditional folding fans with modern smart home technology. The design team precisely replicated the folding fan structure, using the ribs as the panel support and the fan surface as the control area, while concealing built-in sensors within the pendant, achieving harmonious unity between technology and artistry. Furthermore, the team added customisable Scene Capture and energy management functions to satisfy personalisation needs.
