DESIGN NAME: Essence of Space
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Interior
INSPIRATION: The inspiration was derived from the concept of module system. Each area in the space were seen as an isolate cube, as the cubes re-arranged based on client’s life behavior or space demands, the space could be easily shifted into different contour. Lots of functional design elements such as sliding/folding doors and hardware were introduced for the project. A limited space yet with great possibilities were the core principle for the project. The essence of space, was shown on its diversities.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For design strategies, Studio One adapts the open floor plan to overcame the disadvantage of only one-side natural lights form the space, while applying double-glazing for sound isolation and temperature control form its urban environment. Studio One creates a non-hinderance flow towards space, yet each area could be isolated from each other with flexible sliding/folding doors. The possibilities of the space were based on its flexibilities.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project is located at a busy urban area with only one side of natural light. As Studio One first approached the case, design goal was to absorb as much as natural lights for the space and isolate the interior from its busy environment. Hence, Studio One adopts the open floor plan to allow one-side natural lights travel as far as it could be while applying double-glazing for sound isolation and temperature control. Studio One creates a non-hinderance flow for the space, yet each area could be isolated from each other with flexible sliding/folding doors. The possibilities of the space were based on its flexibilities. The form of the space could be easily shaped based on client's space demands.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was completed in Taipei, Taiwan in 2024.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As the project was located in a very urban area, in order to isolate the private house from its busy environment, Studio One applied the double-glazing for sound and heat insulation but maintain the possibility to gain the natural light as much as possible. With the concern often occurs in Taiwan and the age of the house, designer analysis the bearing wall/beam system and design the partition wall to reenforce the existing structure. Built-in wooden structural cabinets and metal rack were all installed onto bearing wall and structure ceiling in order to achieve safe aspect for the interior.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The area of this project is 58sq. m2, which contains living area, dining area, kitchen, study/guest room, master bedroom and bathroom. The space could be separated as an independent zone yet could be also integrated as one open floor plan without solid boundaries.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: a) Relationships between exterior and interior-
The very fundamental problem for designer was to solve the relationship between exterior and interior since the project is located in a populated area on surface floor. Designer applied window wall with adjustable shades to absorb natural light for the space, yet also applied double wall and glazing for sound isolation and temperature control. The privacy and calmness were obtained due to the thoughtful material research and selection.
b) Space form follows function-
In this limited space, designer applied open plan to maximize the possibility and flexibilities for the interior, yet the contour of the space could be re-shaped easily based on client’s space demands. The boundaries between zones could be solid or blur.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to maximizing the limited interior space with more possibilities and flexibilities. How the space or zones were defined without setting up a clear or solid boundaries is the key design objective towards this project. An open plan was introduced to the case in order to achieve the design goal while also allowing natural lights travel as much as it could within the space. As the selection of construction material and structural reinforcement were all designed to solve the existing environment disadvantage and ensure the interior space equipped the strength to withstand the earthquake.
