| DESIGN NAME: Coral Scratcher PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pet Toy INSPIRATION: Inspired by coral and ocean waves in nature, the design team has cleverly integrated these elements into conventional vertical scratching posts. By mimicking the branching structure of coral and the undulating shape of ocean waves, this product innovatively introduces footholds for climbing. This caters to the natural instincts of cats to scratch and climb while ensuring aesthetic pleasure. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This cat scratching post, both aesthetically pleasing and practical, not only provides a space for cats to enjoy scratching and climbing, but also adopts a modern appearance with a minimalist color scheme of black and white to stand out from the homogeneous market glutted with cute pet products; furthermore, it supports function expansion to double as a piece of furniture. Such a product can seamlessly blend into various home environments, creating a space where pets and owners live in harmony. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This modular product enables users to easily adjust its height based on development stages and preferences of cats or home layouts, whereby even less agile cats, like those who are overweight or have shorter legs, can easily reach the top, enjoying the view and fun from elevated positions. The top offers cats a comfortable resting area, and doubles as a side table for placing items like books, magazines and remote controls, providing a shared space for owners and pets to live in harmony. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This product was designed in July 2023 in Hangzhou, and launched in January 2024 in China. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The scratching post employs a modular design, allowing for easy assembly of individual modules using just one threaded rod. Its magnetic top enhances ease of use, and breaks away from unsightly marks caused by traditional screw mounting methods to achieve a minimalist style. The main body is made from environmentally friendly paper wicker, robust, scratch resistant and uneasy to shed. The bottom and top utilize cold rolled steel sprayed with a plastic finish, stable and durable. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The bottom diameter is 430mm, the diameter of the main body of the product is 230mm, and the overall height is 900mm. TAGS: pet supplies, cat scratching post, elements of coral and ocean waves, modular design, without thought design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Through research on market needs and habits of cats, the design team has discovered that traditional cat scratching posts typically offer the basic function but lack additional practical features, and they often adopt a cute style that fails to harmonize with modern home decor, affecting the overall aesthetic appeal of the living space. In response, the team has developed this modern, minimalist cat scratching post integrating aesthetic pleasure and practicality. CHALLENGE: The challenge was how to ensure the aesthetic pleasure of the cat scratching post while satisfying the demand of cats to climb. To address that, this product ingeniously integrates the elements of natural coral and ocean waves into its design to innovatively provide footholds for climbing, which allows cats to freely climb to enjoy the view and fun from elevated positions, achieving a perfect blend of aesthetic pleasure and practicality.
