| DESIGN NAME: Crafting 1000 Scenes PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coffee Shop INSPIRATION: The name "Chian Jing" comes from the Chinese term for "thousand scenes." The spatial expression of this coffee shop tells an engaging story through the layering of light and shadow, combined with mirror effects. Unlike most coffee shops that focus on merchandise displays or bar and seating arrangements, this project uses a variety of materials and contrasting techniques to skillfully blend the scenic delights of changing seasons. Every detail subtly enhances interaction. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Formerly an apparel store, this site is now the inaugural store for 3 young owners who delve into specialty coffee and aspire to create their own brand in northern Taiwan. The coffee shop is enriched with dining, cultural, and artistic elements. In providing a full sensory experience while optimizing sense of space, the 4-meter ceiling of the first floor is styled in vaulted curves with a refreshing turquoise color. In this densely populated urban area, this place reserves a breathable corner, a hidden sanctuary to unwind and savor the aroma of coffee. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The entrance design is simple with large clear glass doors that create a comfortable distance from the bustling street. Inside, unobstructed sightlines lead to a vaulted turquoise ceiling above the coffee counter, giving the first floor an airy and relaxed vibe. The second floor, organized with seating and an evening bar, features a black-and-white backdrop, offering contemporary elegance. The gradation of lighting evokes thoughts on the passage of seasons. Respecting natural states and being eco-conscious, synthetic materials are minimized, using low-VOC wood panels for structural integrity. To enhance water resistance and breathability in the local climate, the designer uses mineral pigments and eco-friendly paints. The focus on safety and health ensures a sustainable, well-being-oriented environment. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in August 2023. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Mirror surfaces, decorative coatings, metalwork, melamine boards, and flame retardant PVC tiles range among the primary materials adopted throughout the space. From behind the barista counter till the staircase leading to the second floor, the designer employs continuous mirrors that extend from the facade to the ceiling, creating mesmerizing effects of layering and reflection. While this serves to address a relatively long narrow layout, it simultaneously diverts one’s attention into exploring a world of mirrored fantasy. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This two-story, sixty-six square meter building in a densely populated urban area features a narrow layout. The designer optimizes space and visual perception with color, mirrors, and window placements. Inspired by coffee, the design provides a sensory experience. The first floor, with its 4-meter-high ceiling, features brass pendant lights and green ceiling, adding a classic British style. The second floor includes seating and a bar area, with linear artificial lights addressing the lack of natural light. Custom furniture and arrangements create a warm atmosphere with the aroma of coffee. Its compact 66-square-meter expanse features a narrow, elongated layout. Within such confined space, the designer deftly integrates color, mirrors, strategic window openings, and juxtaposition of ceiling and facade in optimizing square footage and visual perceptions. CHALLENGE: The design concept draws hints from the imagination about coffee, aiming to provide a full sensory experience that conveys spirit of artisan and emotional logic in the craft of coffee-making. The first floor, boasting its innate 4-meter-height, is adorned with brass-toned pendant lights complementing the turquoise-hued ceiling. The dynamism of eclectic elements enriches the spatial ambiance, infusing a distinctive touch of classy Anglo-style. The second floor accommodates seating and the night bar. In addressing the absence of natural light source, linear lightings are arranged to fully surround and delicately outline this area. Custom-made furniture and arrangements, along interplay of light and shadows, warmly embrace visitors in delightful moments, accentuated by the rich, full-bodied aroma of coffee.
