| DESIGN NAME: Berkley PRIMARY FUNCTION: Furniture INSPIRATION: The Berkley furniture series aims to simplify assembly by eliminating the need for tools. Recognizing that online furniture buyers often struggle with time-consuming and error-prone assembly processes, the design prioritizes ease and efficiency. Through hand-twisting to connect plates and steel tubes, the furniture achieves stability, durability, and enhanced storage capacity. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Berkeley Furniture Collection showcases minimalist elegance with its clean lines and practical design. Durability and stability are ensured by combining chipboard and steel tubing through hand assembly. This design and material is not only strong but also easy to install. The flat pack design reduces shipping costs and the folding storage basket increases storage space. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Berkley range of furniture is designed for quick assembly and disassembly. The whole structure can be easily assembled with a simple twist of the hand, ensuring stability without the need for complicated tools. Fitted with fabric baskets that can be placed in different positions depending on the use. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2024 and was completed in July 2024 in Shenzhen, China. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The Berkley range of furniture is made entirely from chipboard and steel tubing, which ensures product quality while keeping production costs under control. To reduce the size of the package, the fabric baskets can also be folded for storage. The components of the entire range are connected by two-way screws and plastic screws at the top, making it easy to assemble by hand without tools. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: End Table： width 340mm x depth 300mm x height 590mm Coffee Table: width 100mm x depth 500mm x height 460 mm Corner Table：width 288mm x depth 288mm x height 1390 mm TV Stand：width 1100mm x depth 350mm x height 460 mm TAGS: Production Optimized, Flat Pack, Easy Assembly, Adequate storage RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Many companies prioritise low-cost products, which often means limited development budgets and cost-cutting at every stage. It is therefore a challenge to incorporate a tool-free installation concept into budget furniture. The aim of this concept is to demonstrate that tool-free installation concepts and financial gains can indeed coexist if the focus is on optimising design and production, even if the user's assembly experience is optimised and production costs are not increased. CHALLENGE: Ensuring stability and production costs while enabling tool-free assembly was the main challenge for this concept. As a solution, we used tougher steel tubes and chipboard to address stability issues. In addition, sharing components throughout the range was also a solution to reduce costs.
