| DESIGN NAME: Renzo Concept PRIMARY FUNCTION: Accent Chair INSPIRATION: My inspiration emerged from the pursuit of harmony between nature and contemporary aesthetics. My goal is to honor the beauty of solid wood while pushing the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship. By experimenting with curved forms, I aimed to create a sense of lightness that invites users to experience sophistication alongside a connection to the natural world within their living spaces. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A sophisticated fusion of rustic charm and contemporary elegance. Crafted from solid wood, the elegantly curved structure creates a light, airy aesthetic that redefines the potential of natural materials. This unique silhouette, combined with exceptional craftsmanship, brings warmth and sophistication to any space. With years of experience informing my approach, this design embodies my commitment to innovation while celebrating the timeless beauty of wood in furniture design. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This lounge chair is designed for effortless comfort and style. Its elegantly curved shape provides support while creating a visually light presence in any room. Users simply sit back to enjoy its inviting design, which promotes relaxation and a connection to nature. The craftsmanship ensures durability, allowing it to withstand daily use while maintaining its beauty. This chair not only enhances the aesthetic of a space but also offers a unique experience, making it a perfect addition for those seeking both sophistication and comfort in their homes. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project commenced in May 2024 in New York, where I dedicated both my full-time work hours and personal time to its development. Over the course of four months, I refined the design, focusing on the interplay between nature and contemporary aesthetics. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: My lounge chair concept combines traditional craftsmanship with modern production techniques. Made from sustainably sourced solid wood, it features flowing curves achieved through steam bending, enhancing both comfort and visual lightness. The design process focused on minimizing material waste while exploring how to balance rustic textures with contemporary forms. CNC machining ensures precision, while hand-finishing adds warmth, creating a timeless piece suited for any modern interior. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height 890mm x Width 800mm x Depth 890mm TAGS: Solid wood furniture, modern aesthetics, sustainable design, contemporary woodworking, natural materials, curved wood design, innovative furniture concepts, eco-friendly design, minimalist furniture, mid-century inspired design RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research explored the relationship between natural materials and modern aesthetics, focusing on reimagining solid wood in contemporary furniture. I used a qualitative approach, conducting interviews with artisans, analyzing designs, and gathering data from surveys and workshops. Results showed a desire for furniture that blends comfort with sophistication, highlighting the potential to influence sustainable design practices and enhance user appreciation for natural materials. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this design was blending the natural qualities of solid wood with modern aesthetics. The challenge was to curve the wood without compromising its strength, while keeping the design visually light. Traditional woodworking techniques served as inspiration, but modern sustainable practices guided the concept. External factors like production feasibility and technological limitations also influenced the final design, ensuring a balance between creativity and practicality.
