| DESIGN NAME: Hoverpen Interstellar PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ballpoint Pen INSPIRATION: From ancient times to the present, humanity's steps in exploring the unknown realms of the universe have never stopped. Inspired by spacecraft, sci-fi, and all things cosmos, we have created the first-ever levitating pen that integrates into daily life. It reminds people of their longing for the vast universe and the adventurous spirit of exploring the unknown. If you look up at the starry sky, the stars symbolize humanity's ultimate pursuit of the unknown. We hope that the Hoverpen Interstellar can sit on your desk, constantly reminding you that everything is possible, and accompany you in exploring your own limits. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Just as Earth's gravity fades in space, the Hoverpen Interstellar defies physics. Its new ridged design makes spinning mesmerizing, with visible acceleration and deceleration. A simple twist keeps it spinning for up to 20 seconds in perfect motion. Fun to fidget with and hypnotic to watch, the Hoverpen offers entertainment during dull workdays. Spin it and ponder the mysteries of the universe as it endlessly revolves. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Hoverpen Interstellar is refillable with international standard ink, featuring Schmidt cartridges which renowned for their German-engineered luxury and precision in ballpoint pens. The design allows for easy access and effortless replacement of the pen refill. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in May 2020 in Taipei, Taiwan, and continues to refine its production processes and materials. It has already been launched and sold through various global channels. In 2020, the project was honored with the Muse Design Award, and in 2022, it was recognized as one of TIME's Best Inventions. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The development and production of the Hoverpen involve numerous processes. It begins with researching magnetic configurations and testing various possibilities for levitation, followed by meticulous metal processing and fabrication. A total of 103 precise manufacturing steps are required to complete the pen. All factories involved in the production process are carefully selected from local Taiwanese manufacturers, allowing for hands-on verification to ensure the implementation and perfection of every step. By alternating tasks, people improve both logical and out-of-the-box thinking. A Harvard Business Review study found that frequent micro-breaks during brainstorming lead to more idea generation. The Hoverpen was designed with this concept in mind. Imagine you're stuck on a difficult problem. You give the Hoverpen a spin, and throughout the hour, you keep spinning it. Without realizing it, you've turned your brain into an idea machine, solving the problem effortlessly. CHALLENGE: We explored many versions to achieve the levitation effect and eventually succeeded in making the Hoverpen float at a 23 5 degree angle. The spiral often showed creases during production affecting its aesthetics. After multiple discussions with manufacturers, we achieved the final design. Another challenge was the base mold which initially required three molds. However, we optimized the process and successfully used only two molds while maintaining cost and aesthetics.
