DESIGN NAME: The Glory Of Jun Hun 1975
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cultural Preservation and Restoration
INSPIRATION: The project takes the historical space of the Bei Gan Power Plant (also known as the Jun-Hun Power Plant) as its venue, with "The glory of Jun-Hun 1975" as its theme. This allows the "Jun-Hun Power Plant, completed and commissioned in 1975," to be presented to the public for the first time during the second Matsu International Art Island, following the lifting of martial law in Matsu in 30 years, through the collaborative efforts of interdisciplinary art teams. By doing so, we aim to evoke an appreciation for the challenges of wartime power supply as well as the value and preciousness of peace.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project utilizes lighting designs by YI.ng Lighting Design Consultants and sound compositions by musician Yu-Jun Wang , alongside on-site creative performances by three groups of dancers to guide the audience through the boundaries of time back to 1975. Through the interpretation of light and sound, the audience's senses are fully immersed in the flow of time, as if stepping into the Cold War period across the strait, experiencing the challenges of wartime power supply.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Upon entering the control room of the power plant, one must first pass through a 30 meter long tunnel carved into the mountain. The YI.ng Lighting Design Consultants hope to lead the audience back to the past and evoke a sense of the repression during wartime through lighting design.
Besides, the sound artist Yu-Jun Wang integrates the thunderous sounds recorded from the operation of generators at the Nan-Gan Power Plant. This gesture also pays homage to the predecessors who pioneered the establishment of the power plant by carving through the mountains.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is a continuity plans, it had implemented across the entire Matsu Islands from 2021 to 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: In addition to integrating lighting design and musical composition, this project features on-site performances by three groups of dancers with the theme of time travelers, leading the audience to transcend the boundaries of time. Through the combination of environmental elements, lighting, and sound, we aim to create an immersive experience that stimulates all five senses, allowing each piece of work to resonate with the historical significance of the power plant.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The power plant renovation area dimension is 237 square meter(2 floors), main frame structure is tunnel. The walls of the tunnel are adorned with 2700K vintage German explosion-proof wall lamps.
Moreover, sound artist integrates the thunderous sounds recorded from the operation of generators at the Nan-Gan Power Plant. This creates the illusion of the Jun-Hun Power Plant reverting to the deafening noise of its power generation era. Additionally, three generators manufactured by MAN GmbH in Germany are being reactivated after retirement.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: To authentically blend into local characteristics and historical elements, our design team had to go to Matsu to do their fieldwork. We gathered historical background, architectural features, environmental sounds, and voices, then transformed these concepts into local expressions through lighting art, sound art, and dance art. The follow-up results of the project were also impressive, It attracted approximately 27,000 indoor visitors, created 613 reports from domestic and international media and reached an estimated audience of around 1,280,538 people.
CHALLENGE: Due to the location being an abandoned power plant from the Cold War era, it has long been in a state of disrepair and is a derelict site now. Besides refurbishing it to provide suitable space for artists to perform, there are safety issues due to the deteriorated steel frame supporting the mountain walls. Therefore, the most challenging thing at the time was to preserve the existing conditions and allow art performance in a non-destructive manner.
