DESIGN NAME: Tranquility
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interior Design
INSPIRATION: At the early stage of the design, it is interesting that the owner and his spouse did not provide explicit directives to the designer. However, the designer was so impressed by their reserved, modest, calm, and cultured traits. These essential personality traits keenly captured, then converted to the ultimate design. The owner and his spouse felt satisfied about the final deliverables.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Situated in Tianjin, China, this project is a 290m² flat floor residence featuring four bedrooms. The design philosophy stresses minimalism and allows for a tranquil and insightful space arrangement loaded with deeper reflections. This living space looks like a mirror portraying the owner's personality traits, making the design differentiated from others.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The initial floor plan was considered reasonable which led the designers to refrain from making extensive structural modifications. To enhance the traffic flow, the designer eliminated some non-load bearing walls in the corridors and the master bedroom, particularly in the cloakroom, creating a more fluent traffic line.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project commenced in March 2023 in Tianjin and came to completion in March 2024, with field shooting done in April 2024.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As the whole design is set in tranquility and simplicity, gray and white cold tones are dominant. Even though it looks simple, the craftsmanship is exceptionally fine grained. A diverse array of materials is used interiorly, including black metal aluminum panels, walnut veneer, and art boards. Notably, the walnut veneer exhibits an intricately carved pattern, highlighting an abundance of details covered in the simplicity of the overall design.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The couple is raising two pet dogs, corals and fish and for ease of keeping pets, the designer modified a bedroom near the entrance into pets’ room. This bedroom features an en suite bathroom with pipes directly connected to the fish tank pipeline, making routine maintenance simple. A concealed door harmonizes with the walnut vertical face of the entryway, providing an attractive appearance and preventing potential disturbances caused by the dogs when guests or children stay in.
CHALLENGE: As a creative solution, the designer used a soft curved vertical face to conceal the unremovable concrete load bearing wall situated between the living room and the main balcony. This curved design element is extended all the way to the ceiling above the living room, dining room, and corridor, enhancing visual coherence and softening the rigidity of the wall. As a result, the overall space seems to be more elegant and fluid ambiance.
