DESIGN NAME: Flutter Chapters
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: The design for this home was inspired by the needs and preferences of a young couple, symbolizing the start of a new chapter in their lives. A wall, representing the 'turning of the page,' captures this concept. The circular design reflects their anticipation for the future, embracing dynamism and continuity. With a preference for wabi-sabi, the designer incorporated earthy tones and natural elements like wood and textures. The result is a warm, cozy, and functional space, thoughtfully designed to meet the long-term needs of the residents.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design behind the sofa wall symbolizes the beginning of a new life chapter. A small corner is removed to represent the turning of a page, adding dynamism to the space. The open shelf in this area holds memorabilia, while the wall separates social and private zones, making daily life feel like the turning of a book page. The rounded walls and door frames, embodying the wabi-sabi style, create a cave-like feeling, offering security. The dining area was redefined as a versatile kitchen island, blending functionality with fluidity, ensuring a flexible and practical space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The hostess is delighted with the kitchen island's versatility, noting that it serves not only for daily activities and coffee making but also as the core for social gatherings with friends. She finds its size and design practical and perfect for everyday needs. The host is equally pleased with the spacious, comfortable bathroom, particularly the bathtub, which is ideal for couples to relax together. He also appreciates the thoughtful layout connecting the master bedroom, dressing room, and bathroom, providing both convenience and functionality.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in November 2024 in Taiwan.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The site is 120 square meters. It has been changed from 4 rooms, 1 living room, 1 dining room, and 2 bathrooms to 3 rooms, 1 living room, 1 dining room, and 2 bathrooms. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: 'Flutter Chapters' draws inspiration from books, symbolizing the new chapter in a young couple's life. The designer used a 'turning of the page' concept with wabi-sabi elements. The warm milky brown palette, combined with wood and textured materials, creates a comfortable, natural atmosphere. The layout shifted from four rooms to three, focusing on practicality and aesthetics. The kitchen island replaces a traditional dining table, offering multifunctional use. The smooth circulation ensures easy access to all functional areas, making the space ideal for daily family life.
CHALLENGE: The wabi-sabi style has a wide range of expressions. The designer needed to strike a balance between grandeur, beauty, and art. After repeated communication and coordination, the design meets the needs of the living space but does not become overly artistic. In terms of spatial proportion and layout adjustment, the designer removed the bathroom compartment and enlarged it. The change involved rearranging the piping, and the designer needed to precisely balance the proportions to ensure the functionality and comfort of each area.
