DESIGN NAME: Quenched Silence
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: The site is a new apartment. With the lifestyle change, modern people's demand for home is more diversified. The owner moved to a new city to study for his life plan and hoped that this place could be a perfect place to study. In the limited space, the designers tried to create a comfortable space for reading and gathering with friends. The color and layout arrangement amplify the space. The calm color palette accentuates the tranquility. The owner's preference for a modern, minimalist style is applied to create a place for study and relaxation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Stable black, gray, white, and earthy tones create a quiet space for reading. However, to enhance the vision in the limited area, the designers used a curved design to modify the beams on the ceiling to make the space more spacious and smoother. Finally, the space is enlarged with mirrors and lighting. The living room is where the owner spends most of his time, so the designers planned it as a complex space for reading and gathering. The bookcase behind the sofa provides ample storage, while the bar in the center of the living room can serve as a dining table or work area.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project is highly appreciated by the owner for creating a place for storage, wine collection, and gathering within a limited space. Instead of a dining table, a kitchen island is installed in the dining room to create a casual atmosphere for gatherings. The black mirrors in the social area enlarge the space. The space behind the sofa serves as a desk. The separate dressing room provides the residents with ample storage for make-up and clothes. The project serves three functions: storage, gathering, and reading.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in November 2023 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Materials: EGGER system boards, Neolith, tiles, black mirrors, eco-friendly paints, etc. In terms of color planning, the designers used stable dark colors as the base to create a quiet atmosphere for the owner to read or work. The social area is a highly accommodating grayscale color with modern and minimalist furniture and accessories to create a comfortable and relaxing gathering space. The bedroom is a change from the calm color of the living room, with neutral colors and wood grain to bring out a sense of security.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The site is a new apartment totaling 49.5 square meters with a bedroom, a living room, and a dining room. The site was originally designed as a 2-bedroom apartment. The apartment serves only one person, so the designers converted the layout to one bedroom, one living room, and one dining room. The extra space is used to remodel the original bathroom and add a dressing room.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Within the limited space, the designers utilized a modern minimalist style and a calm color palette, mainly natural wood and stone patterns, to subtly accentuate the pure and restrained nature of the space. The superposition of materials creates a quiet and comfortable reading corner. To maximize the size of the space, the curved ceiling softens the visual constraints, and mirrors and light expand the space. At the same time, a multi-functional area for reading and socializing in the living room has a bar and bookcases, so that the owner can enjoy a good time with friends while pursuing academic achievements.
CHALLENGE: In a narrow site with large structures, the project is designed to embellish and conceal specific constraints through the use of finishes. What the owner found objectionable and unsatisfactory, such as large beams and fire pipes, were visually optimized with mirrors and light strips to eliminate the presence of volume. At the same time, the designers maximize the space in each small space to meet the needs of the occupant.
