DESIGN NAME: Morning Field
PRIMARY FUNCTION: B and B
INSPIRATION: The inspiration and motivation come from understanding and imagining the space, as well as mastering the needs of the owner. By observing and analyzing the site and communicating with the owner, the designers found the potential of the space and the needs of the occupants and then proposed a design solution. The project is the remodeling of a B&B in Yilan. The owner wants to transform it into a comfortable and relaxing space for vacation. The designers retained the original architectural concrete and fused it with modern styles to create a minimalist wabi-sabi.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The designers retained the original color tone of architectural concrete to present the essence of the base. Then, they precisely control the proportions of the material and color to make it more vivid to the eye. To meet the aesthetics, the designers incorporated modern style elements, such as simple lines, and a warm atmosphere. The original layout of the B&B was stuffy, so the designers re-planned it. On the second floor, the designers moved the bathtub to a semi-outdoor area to reduce the limitation of the bathing area. Finally, screen curtains and space tiles define the relaxation area and add a cozy atmosphere.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The owner expresses high satisfaction and appreciation for the utilization of space on the second floor. Moving the bathtub to the semi-outdoor space elegantly interpreted the function of the B&B and greatly enhanced its appeal to consumers. The second floor has been redefined with clever design ideas. The additional area fulfills the owner's requirements and exceeds his original expectations.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in October 2023 in Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Materials: Italian dark paint, stone plastic composite flooring, laminate dark wood vintage tiles, cotton and linen fabrics, etc. Based on the architectural concrete color, the designers used dark building materials and added textures with vintage tiles and cotton linen fabrics to create a warm atmosphere. To enhance the relaxing atmosphere, the designers decorated the cushions and dining room lighting fixtures with cotton, linen, and rattan.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Reasonable layout planning not only maximizes space utilization but also provides a comfortable living experience. The site has a total area of 247.9 square meters and consists of three floors. The B&B needs to provide reception, dining, and accommodation functions. The designers planned the first floor as a shared area, including a lounge and dining area, and removed the kitchen island to expand the living room and dining room. The second floor is a four-person room and bathtub area, while the third floor has two double rooms.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The designers adopted a minimalistic wabi-sabi style according to the potential of the space and the owner's needs. They preserved the original concrete structure of the building to show its original look. Through a precise mix of materials and colors, as well as the integration of modern style elements, the designers created a comfortable space suitable for a vacation. To break the limitations of the original space, they re-planned the circulation.
CHALLENGE: The site is located in Yilan, which is known as the "rainy city". To cope with the humid and rainy climate, the designers selected materials to achieve aesthetics and moisture resistance. The stone plastic composite flooring, is moisture-resistant, durable, and wear-resistant, making it suitable for a B&B and it will not be warping after a few years. The dark color scheme, which is in harmony with the concrete of the building, emphasizes the proportion of the space and the rhythm of the structure, realizing the infinite possibilities of the design.
