DESIGN NAME: Mayday 5525 Live Tour
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Concert
INSPIRATION: 5525 is a large-scale tour by Mayday for their 25th anniversary. Their music from their debut to the present day is like a time machine that leads the audience back to the day of their own memories. The first of its kind in Taiwan, the giant spherical LED installation symbolizes the spirit of the five members and the souls of their fans. AI animation technology is also used to integrate the visual with virtual and real, giving the audience an unforgettable concert experience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The stage design breaking away from the previous 2D screen, the stage has a 12-meter diameter and five 5-meter 3D LED spheres. Their surfaces are seamlessly spliced together to create a three-dimensional space where images can be seen more clearly. As the performance progresses, it can be a concrete earth, moon, balloon, etc., or a soul, brainwave, even a memory. The visualization method visualizes the music and allows the artists to interact with the stage, making the performance more powerful.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It’s a complete storytelling, sound, and light-integrated design experience, featuring original version and new arrangements songs. In addition to the sensory effects such as lights & lasers, the band's history and fans' memories are also interspersed in the video content. This kind of emotional resonance is the most fascinating part of the concert, as it doesn’t intentionally create a nostalgic and sentimental atmosphere, but rather reveals the common memory between the band and the fans inadvertently.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The concert started on 31 December 2023 in Taichung, and continues touring around the world now.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Using the LED spheres, the stage began like an aircraft then transformed into a time machine that leads the audience to travel through time and space. The song "Sun Wu Kong" expresses the spirit of adventure, while the song "Song of battle" reflects on diversified issues. The closing song "Dokodemo Door" highlights family, friendship, and looking forward to the future. Various Easter eggs in video contents connect the band's progress and fans' memories which makes more discussion after the show.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The stage was 90m wide, with a huge 12m diameter, 10-ton sphere and five 5m diameter, 3-ton spheres. A total of 13,000 pieces of special-specification LED were used to form them. And the base of the stage was also equipped with plenty of LED screens. The console area was integrated into the stage design as a hemisphere. The audience holds reusable lighting sticks, which can pair to their seats via App or NFC for sync to the lighting controller to extend the stage design to the entire venue.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In order to bring out the concept of Mayday's 25th anniversary, the program uses Mayday's music as a time machine to lead the audience back to the day that belongs to their own memories. Through video content, the program expresses the spirit of adventure, reflecting on diverse issues such as self-identity, environmental conservation, and human nature, demonstrating the impact of music, and attempting to utilize AI animation technology to imagine another possibility of parallel worlds.
CHALLENGE: Organizing a concert is a race against time. The manufacturing process of the sphere is complex and requires overcoming issues such as size, workmanship, and production efficiency. Video content of the spheres are needed to ensure that the holographic projection-like effect can be clearly presented at different angles. And also needs to avoid blocking the audience's view by lighting and audio equipment. This all required skillful structural techniques to ensure its safety.
