| DESIGN NAME: Yoshino PRIMARY FUNCTION: Rechargeable Electric Power Station INSPIRATION: Our holistic brand and product design for Yoshino is inspired by the industrious honey bee - a creature which evokes ideas of nature, a buzzing energy, hard work and dedication. We reimagined the bee’s physical form to be a hexagon, a symbol of modularity and power. From Yoshino's branding to the products' specific hexagonal design elements such as the venting ports, shoulder strap attachments, UI design and even the base pads - the bee’s hexagonal shape echoes across the entire product suite. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As the world’s first solid-state family of power stations, Yoshino offers a safe, sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, generators and liquid electrolyte lithium-ion batteries. While most power devices sold today are technical and masculine, our’s is less a tool than it is a lifestyle product, offering a reliable energy source in a range of contexts: family getaways, outdoor adventures, commercial job sites, emergencies. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: One charges the portable solid-state battery power station with power before charging then using the power station to charge other electric devices - phones, refrigerators, power tools, lights, etc. - in situations like outdoor getaways, emergencies and on job sites. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: December 2021 - September 2023 in San Francisco, CA |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We created a scalable design language which would be clearly identifiable across Yoshino’s entire product family. Yoshino’s design signature is a sleek aluminum metal handle forming a continuous band which wraps around the shell. This iconic,ergonomic handle runs the full length of each unit, making it easy to pick up and move. A dynamic, angular geometry accentuates power and conveys a stable form. Built via injection molding, rugged, reinforced casing protects the internal components of each unit from both weather and impact. Lastly, a shatterproof and water resistant interface extends the cohesive aesthetic of Yoshino’s product family. This interface is thoughtfully protected by the trim of the face plate or the handlebars. Our CMF design approach draws inspiration from both outdoors recreation and lifestyle categories with a sophisticated, matte and muted green and gray tones. These were intentionally selected to differentiate Yoshino from the very bright, technical primary color palettes of the battery and power tool category. The focus on high-quality materials, like a metal handle in contrast to the painted finish on competitive products, also convey a durable and premium product. All elements of our design convey a premium and lifestyle product: high-quality materials, like the metal handle and contrasting painted finish plus the UI design. This scalable design language is reflected across the entire product suite. Thanks to solid-state technology, we have the lightest, most portable, and safest option on the market.
