DESIGN NAME: F1 Lenovo
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Trophy
INSPIRATION: Seeking to transform the podium celebration into a dynamic, memorable experience, the trophy transcends static design with an interactive element to capture victory’s spirit. Its striking shape mirrors F1 car air intakes and features a parametric pattern echoing Lenovo’s logo proportions.
The goal was to craft a tribute that honors F1 winners and their backgrounds, establishes a connection with fans, and aligns with the high level of technological sophistication synonymous with the motorsport.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 2023 Formula 1 Lenovo Japanese and US Grand Prix trophies, created by Lenovo and renowned design firm Pininfarina, are the world’s first kiss-reactive trophies. Equipped with smart technology, the trophy’s indicator lights direct winners to a spot that uses the latest touch sensitive micro-switch technology. Upon the winner’s celebratory kiss, the trophy illuminates the colors of the driver’s national flag to create an one-of-a-kind spectacle, elevating the podium experience.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To make the trophy light up in the colors of the winning driver's national flag, all the driver needs to do is give it a celebratory kiss. The trophy has special indicator lights that guide the driver to the right spot, clearly marked with the text "kiss me." Once they share that special moment with the trophy, it creates a beautiful and unique display of lights.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Lenovo and Pininfarina began collaborating on the design of the project in March 2023. The trophies resulting from this collaboration made their debut at the Formula 1 Lenovo Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka in September 2023 and subsequently at the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, in October.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The Pininfarina team conducted thorough research on existing trophies and celebrations across various sports categories. The findings revealed a lack of interactive elements between the trophy and the person being awarded. In collaboration with Lenovo, the Pininfarina team innovatively designed and developed the first-ever trophy activated by a kiss, which then showcases the winner's national flag.
CHALLENGE: The primary challenge involved effectively diffusing light and colors among the trophy due to the complex nature of LED matrix distribution and lightpipe technology. Additionally, the team had to ensure that the activation process for the trophy by the winning driver was both intuitive and secure.
