DESIGN NAME: Half A Century Of Building Storeys
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Book
INSPIRATION: The book is both singular and multitudinous—united like the firm’s great family of colleagues and diverse like its areas of expertise. The challenge was to express this duality while simultaneously retreading the firm’s history, all within an original publication that had to be distinct from a corporate portfolio. The solution lay in dividing projects, concepts, and anecdotes into 23 articles across 6 categories, each of which presents a specific format, tone, and graphical treatment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The retrospective publication was published for NEUF’s 50th anniversary to retrace the evolution of the organization in parallel with the development of Montreal’s built landscape. Archives, photographs, anecdotes and interviews demonstrate the diversity of the firm’s completed projects across Canada, the Americas, in Europe and in Asia. 23 articles combine to form a randomized composition, which makes for a dynamic reading experience.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cover is presented as an attractive case binding. Lettering is embossed and printed in white ink. Embossing the title (as opposed to simply printing it in ink) demonstrates the importance of materiality to our profession.
A limited-edition presentation case was also produced for delivery of the book to current and former Partners of the firm. This made-to-measure 12x14x4“ case is crafted from laminated cardstock. Its bright red colour (Pantone 485C, one of the firm’s official colours) contrasts with and emphasizes the book’s white cover.
