DESIGN NAME: Airiva Wind Energy System
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Clean Power Production
INSPIRATION: While researching renewable energy solutions for a project, designer Joe Doucet noted that many distributed energy products in the marketplace lacked consideration for aesthetics and good design principles. This insight resulted in the development of a conceptual design for a new wind energy product and the formation of Airiva in order to develop and bring the product to market.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Airiva is a modular, scalable and smart wind energy system consisting of an array of vertical wind turbines within a contemporary frame. The elevated design plays a meaningful role in adoption and integrates within the architecture and infrastructure of our urban and suburban landscapes to bring clean energy closer to where we live and work. Coexisting with and complementing other technologies, the generated electricity can be used directly on site, stored or fed into the grid. The wind energy system can be utilized in a broad diversity of applications. These include urban & built environments, commercial & industrial facilities, air, road & rail infrastructure networks, harbors & coastal areas.
Key benefits include:
•Visually compelling design provides a powerful representation of renewable energy.
•Modular, scalable and adaptable to site specific needs.
•System and site information can be remotely monitored for geographically distributed installations.
•Manufacturing targeted to use a minimum of 80% recycled materials.
•Designed for mass manufacturing and ease of transport.
•Compatible with other distributed energy technologies.
•Airiva’s targeted LCOE is competitive both in the USA and internationally against other smaller scale distributed energy resources.
•Quiet and safe, Airiva systems are suitable for a broad diversity of installation environments.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Airiva is utilizing the principles of good design and aesthetics to help audiences rethink the way they view and understand renewable energy sources. Design and aesthetics have not played a significant role in the development of the renewable energy sector. Airiva is focused on expanding opportunities for wind energy in particular.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Designing and building an innovative wind energy product is a complex synthesis of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and meteorology. Balancing all of these disciplines within a compelling contemporary form factor and design constantly created new challenges and opportunities to rethink our engineering, materials and designs.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each unit consists of two 2100mmL x 2100mmH x 1050mmD segments. Units are designed to be networked together and can be scaled to suit site-specific needs. Completing the system is an 800mmL x 2100mmH x 1050mmD end hub unit that provides controls, communications and power management. The system is designed to support global transport and distribution.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Designing and building an innovative wind energy product is a complex synthesis of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industrial engineering and meteorology. Balancing all of these disciplines within a compelling design constantly created new challenges and opportunities to rethink our engineering, materials and designs. Airiva has worked more than two years researching, designing, engineering and testing its wind energy system at a number of locations in the USA.
