DESIGN NAME: Model Q
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Door Lock
INSPIRATION: Our motivation stems from the increasing concerns surrounding the cybersecurity of electronic consumer products and the inconvenience of access management. As we addressed these challenges, we realized the potential of applying our semiconductor technology, originally developed for businesses, to enhance security in consumer products. Recognizing that a door lock is the first step in keeping people safe, we decided to start our work here.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Model Q is equipped with patented technology that allows authorized users with designated smartphones to unlock doors in just 0.001 seconds through proximity sensing, eliminating the need for manual interaction. It can accommodate various door types, even glass doors, as it is the world's smallest one-piece push-pull door lock with a unique design that conceals the lock body within the door. The user-friendly features include an ergonomic shape, anti-slip coating, and inclusive structural design, allowing easy operation from both right and left sides for users of all ages. Its security is further fortified by a patented 99.99% antivirus panel, offering enhanced protection when using passwords and physical keys.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Users have multiple unlock options: pre-authorized smartphones, passwords, or physical keys. Simply register the smartphone through our app to enjoy easy access within 1 meter when it has over 5% power. Password entry permits the inclusion of 32 fake digits before and after the real code, preventing snooping. Temporary passwords can be generated for special occasions. Plus, for seamless entry, doors automatically open when using a smartphone or password, eliminating the need to push the grip.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project will finish in April 2023 in Taiwan. It has won the 2023 iF Design Award in the professional concept and product concept categories. It has also won the 2022 Muse Design Award in the product design - safety category.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Systematically, our patented technology, building on the sturdy foundation of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), simplifies the intricate security processes. It also sets an industry precedent with a remote setup for temporary passwords without internet connection. Exteriorly, the compact size, concealed lock body, and the option to open from both right and left sides prioritize inclusivity, while minimizing impact on the door’s design. The ergonomic shape, coupled with carefully calibrated force dynamics, ensures effortless operation for users of all abilities, ages, and genders.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 70mm (W) * 175mm (L) * 35mm (T), with four CR123 / CR123A lithium batteries for each lock.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Following in-depth research of the mature smart door lock markets, we saw an unmet demand among users for an elevated standard of security and convenience. Our pursuit led us to develop a solution designed to eradicate concerns related to replication, misjudgment, and privacy breaches. Our goal is to make opening the door as simple as it was before, but without needing a key anymore.
CHALLENGE: The challenges involved designing and developing the keyless technology capable of ensuring cost-effectiveness in end-product manufacturing, all while maintaining a sleek and compact size that seamlessly integrates with the overall decor.
