DESIGN NAME: Fetch
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Application
INSPIRATION: The app provides a user-friendly experience for buying, selling, and managing warranties of second-hand products. Our survey identified issues in product acquisition, price negotiations, quality control, and personal safety in existing marketplaces. Managing warranties is often neglected due to difficulties in finding information, resulting in underutilized benefits and missed cost savings.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The 'fetch' service offers a holistic solution for buying, selling, trading, and managing products in a user-centric platform. As a second-hand marketplace app, it uses AI-generated imagery and a user-friendly warranty system to suggest products based on listed items, enhancing user confidence and convenience in second-hand shopping while promoting sustainable choices.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This mobile application stands out through its innovative approach to product visualization and warranty management in the second-hand marketplace sector. The AI-generated images not only serve as a visually intriguing platform but also act as a functional catalog of products that aids the user’s decision process. The two systems work seamlessly together, allowing users to easily list their products for sale in the marketplace with all necessary information located by the warranty management system. Transferring warranty information during the sale is as easy as a tap of a button, where all information will be relocated to the buyer.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2019 in West Lafayette, Indiana and was initially completed the 1st phase develop in Nov. 2023.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In a world characterized by rapid technological advancements and an ever-growing consumer product market, the need for innovative solutions to enhance sustainability, affordability, and user experience is paramount. The core idea of this project is to seamlessly integrate three crucial aspects of consumer products ownership: sustainable e-commerce platform for second handed products, AI-driven personalized recommendation, and efficient product management. The goals of the project is to reimagine the way users explore, purchase, and exchange used products while promoting sustainability and affordability through an AI-driven e-commerce marketplace. The project compiles secondary research, primary research, development, and usability testing with prototypes.
Research was conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of consumer behavior, attitudes towards purchasing pre-owned products, and their perspective on sustainability and environmental consciousness. This research involved a multi-faceted approach, including market analysis, surveys(50+ Participants), interviews(20+), and user feedback from prototype testing(20+). Market analysis focused on studying existing e-commerce platforms, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement. Surveys were disseminated to a diverse sample of potential users, probing their willingness to buy or sell second-hand items, their motivations for sustainable consumer practices, and their feedback on AI generated images. In-depth interviews were conducted to gain qualitative insights into their preferences, pain points, and expectations from an ideal platform. The user feedback from prototype testing further enriched the understanding of the platform's user experience and allowed detailed fine-tuning its features and functionalities.
The research results prompted the e-commerce platform called Fetch, which utilizes the form of mobile applications to provide a comprehensive suite of features that make sustainable and responsible consumer practices accessible at the user’s fingertips.
CHALLENGE: The initial challenge was focused on creating suitable recommendations for users during their shopping needs. Additionally, the team aimed to comprehend the shopping behaviors of individuals through various research methods. Another significant hurdle was the development of a platform that enabled users to efficiently manage their items and find desired products in proximity. The 'fetch' team tackled these challenges by implementing AI-generated tools, a smart warranty system, and a trading platform.
