DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
In Generations

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residence

INSPIRATION:
'Extended family' is not only the traditional Chinese desire for family reunion but also symbolizes the inheritance and continuity of family memory. Elderly, middle-aged, and young people have different expectations of interior design aesthetics. Elderly people hope that the space can have traditional Chinese classical aesthetics, while the young generation expects the minimalist of modernism. The design team took the concept of 'the dome-like heaven embraces the vast earth' to express the elegant oriental design with minimalistic lines, defining a modern oriental residence.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The marble floor of the foyer greets people with images of circles, peonies, fish, and algae, symbolizing the wealth and harmony that Chinese scholars pursue. The walls are decorated with colorful gilt to symbolize the latticework of Chinese windows, which extends to the wood lines on the ceilings of the social area, and the round walnut table in the dining room, representing the 'unity' of the family. The Oriental element translates traditional aesthetics with modern minimalist lines, and the silhouette is depicted with titanium-plated metal.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
To install a wall-hanging TV, the TV wall is in the middle of the bedroom and serves as a boundary with the study room. The wall must be open but private, a divider but not an obstruction. Only the floor was not enough to support the weight of the TV and the wall, so the designers put more effort into the wall's conception to prevent it from tipping over and to withstand the weight of the wall. In the semi-open study room, to maintain openness, the high ceiling retains the light and unobstructed view.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in March 2023 in Taiwan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The style of the project is a fusion of East and West. The classic Chinese round table and the ceiling are made of walnut wood, a symbol of wealth, presenting a sophisticated, vintage look of Chinese culture. The ceiling and edges of the space are wrapped in black lines and titanium plating, while a black matte iron molding wall is paired with a crystal lighting fixture. The design team used modern materials to decorate the essence of Chinese style, conveying a modern oriental style with a humanistic touch.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The site is 301 square meters in size and consists of two units on the same floor. The design team integrated the living room and dining room of the two units to expand the social area. To make the living room look wider, the ceiling trim stretches the visual center to the right to enlarge the living room. The TV wall crosses the corridor to the right and then extends to form a long axis, presenting a visual effect of horizontal extension of left and right.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The name of the project, 'Between Three Generations', comes from the age range of the family. The elderly want the home to display the classical beauty of Chinese style, while the younger generation expects a modern and stylish look. The design team struck a balance between old and new, traditional and modern aesthetics. The building materials, colors, and design are in line with the aesthetics of each family member, creating a warm home for the extended family. The project is set against a backdrop of cultural imagery to create an artistic design in the 'New Chinese' aesthetic.

CHALLENGE:
The project that serves an extended family is designed based on the aesthetic needs and expectations of each member. The elders preferred the traditional but not complex oriental style, while the middle-aged people preferred the minimalistic and modern style. To achieve a design that satisfies all three generations, the designer took the essence from both Chinese and modern styles and viewed the project from the perspective of all three generations, satisfying those who like modern style and those who like Chinese style.
