| DESIGN NAME: Extraterrestrial PRIMARY FUNCTION: World Tour Live INSPIRATION: The idea derived from his album Alien From The Sky. Expanding the inspiration from here, the theme of Extraterrestrial World Tour Live was created, sharing the same name with the song in Chinese. A science fictional story was designed to build a plot in the concert. Xue played the character of an Interstellar Executive Officer, who was ordered to destroy the Earth. He got gradually moved by the intrinsic beauty of human and decided to sacrifice himself to save the planet. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Joker Xue is a Chinese singer songwriter who is known for his artistic talent. Beijing Showin, a production company, is in charge of planning his concert, Extraterrestrial World Tour Live. It employs storytelling throughout the entire performance. Music, movie, and live shows are integrated together to create a virtually real story world. The stage, lighting, visual effects, and props allow the audience to immerse themselves in. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To open the show, singer Joker Xue descends from the sky on the spacecraft to establish the setting of the theme Extraterrestrial. In terms of the overall design of the stage, mechanical ground raising, huge LED screens for displaying VCR, and lighting and laser are all utilized to build the effects for the performance. They cooperate altogether with singing and live band. Stage mechanisms, visual projections, and other multiple departments need to operate simultaneously to make the gorgeously shocking effects possible. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The debut show of the tour was launched on October 23, 2021. The performance duration is usually 3 hours starting at 7PM and ending at 10PM. The tour does not only limit to cities in China, but also places overseas. So far, the tour has performed 40 times in various cities and it is still on going. It is planned to hold 100 shows before ending the tour. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Our approach is to apply high technology instruments to achieve the desired effects. In total, there are 21 sets of stage lifts utilized throughout the entire show. Mechanisms for the moving dynamics are elaborately designed to create multiple visual variations. More than 2,000 lighting instruments, 28 groups of movable LED screens, and 250 CNC motors are used to bring versatile changes in the visual effects. On the sides of the stage, the LED screens are about 2200 square meters. Cooperating with lighting and sound effects, the projection visuals build up magnificent scenes of the grand environment setting. To put this design into reality, the execution involves using 40 vehicles of 18 meter car as the transportation medium for the stage hardware and accessories. Our team actively gathered materials from existing outstanding concerts, films, plays, as well as new media art forms to discuss with the artist. To combine the themes of love, encouragement, peace, and environmental protection, directors decided to create an immersive scenery to present the storyline of aliens saving the Earth. Hence, the artist is characterized as the “Interstellar Executive Officer”. We found out that the current forms of concert can be mainly categorized as pure singing or the combination of singing and acting. Considering the large scale of the tour and the possibilities of stage design that stimulate enjoyment, we decided to go with the second form of performance to benefit both the artist and the audience. Therefore, the structure is organized by having story plots presented at the beginning and interspersed in the middle between some songs. The storyline acts as an environmental background that sets the fundamental for arts, scenery, lights, and props. Consequently, we can design a show that is freshly attractive and evokes resonance from the audience. CHALLENGE: The most challenging factor to our project is the unpredictable weather conditions. Because the whole stage contains huge mass including multi-directional moving mechanisms, when winds blows, the spaceship weighing 30 tons and the 2,000 square meters big LED screen might be shaking. When this situation takes place, a portion of the stage crafts, and even the LED screen, will be lowered down to the surface. Lifting points and weighting will be paid with special attention during the show. Heavy rain is another vitally difficult obstacle. When the forecast appears to be raining, the team will first evaluate if the show can still run. If so, raincoats need to be present in audience’s seats and waterproof protections to the stage crafts and devices will be added.
