DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: Long Time
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wall Clock
INSPIRATION: The clock was inspired by kirigami, the Japanese art of folding and cutting paper. In kirigami, paper is both folded and cut, resulting in a three-dimensional design that stands out from the page.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The clock is made from a single narrow strip of metal. The cutting and folding technique allows for the creation of Roman numerals on the clock's sides. As a result, the numerals themselves seem to leap out of the metal strip, creating a play of positive and negative areas. The clock is positioned 5 cm away from the wall and appears to be floating.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The clock arrives ready to use and can be hung on the wall with two screws.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: March 2020 - July 2020 Studio Wallaby, Yoqneam-Ilit, Israel
|
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Made from a high-quality, laser-cut strip of aluminum, the clock has been sustainably designed to minimize material waste.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Size: 96.5X17X5 cm / 38X6.7X2 Inches
TAGS: wall clock, oversize clock, interior design, Studio Wallaby
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The study centered on the design aspects of the product, incorporating the development of numerous paper models and layouts. This entailed the analysis of dimensions, proportions, fonts, and the structural integrity of the forthcoming clock. The investigation resulted in the choice of Roman numerals 3 and 9 as the central design elements, chosen for their symmetry, which enabled the application of the Kirigami effect.
CHALLENGE: Balancing the artistic aspect of kirigami with the functional requirements of a clock was tricky. Designing Roman numerals that can be cut and folded effectively from the aluminum strip while remaining visually appealing and easily readable poses a creative challenge.

The innovative approach to combining traditional art forms with modern design in the creation of functional objects is always a delight to witness. The inspiration drawn from kirigami, a sophisticated art of folding and cutting paper, to conceive a wall clock that transcends ordinary design boundaries is nothing short of remarkable. By employing a single narrow strip of metal, not only does the clock pay homage to the meticulous craft of kirigami, but it also showcases an impressive blend of aesthetics and functionality. The clever use of cutting and folding techniques to bring Roman numerals to life, creating an illusion of them leaping from the strip, alongside the clock's floating appearance off the wall, is a testament to a profound understanding of design and space. The rigorous research and development process, focusing on dimensions, proportions, and the integrity of design, culminates in a piece where symmetry and innovation coexist harmoniously. Moreover, the sustainable approach to its creation, using a laser-cut strip of aluminum to minimize waste, reflects a thoughtful consideration for environmental impact. Overcoming the challenge of marrying kirigami's artistic essence with the practical demands of a clock, and achieving a balance between visual appeal and readability in the numerals, reveals a commendable level of creativity and dedication. The work of Shelly Agronin not only stands as a significant achievement in furniture design but also serves as an inspiring example of how traditional arts can inform and elevate contemporary design practices.
