DESIGN NAME: Shede Spirit Oriental Wisdom
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Packaging
INSPIRATION: Shede Spirits and Weiqi are intimately related, although they are in different realms. One of the most important rules in playing Weiqi is focusing on the big picture, which requires exchanging small sacrifices for greater value. This mindset is consistent with the dialectical nexus between abnegation and obtainment, which is also the wisdom valued by Shede Spirits. Inspired by this association, the packaging fully incorporates the Weiqi game, endowing the product with unique cultural value.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The cultural and creative spirits product launched by Shede comes in a gift box themed on the association between the brand connotation of Shede Spirits and the culture of Weiqi, also called Go. This packaging design aims to carry forward Chinese wisdom, and to promote the cultural combo of Weiqi and spirits. Provided with the spirits bottles styled after Weiqi stones, complimentary Weiqi stone bowls and Weiqi board, users can play Weiqi with friends while savoring the spirits with relish.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When the box is opened, users will be greeted by a classic Weiqi game in a graphic form, brimming with a unique and culturally rich vibe. The spirits bottles are styled after black and white Weiqi stones, which are rounded, sleek, and therefore comfortable to hold. This box also comes with complimentary Weiqi stone bowls and Weiqi board, whereby users can play Weiqi and get a glimpse into its spiritual core over a glass of spirits.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The design and development of this project started in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, in September, 2022. It will be introduced to Chinese market in October, 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The kraft paper used to make this corrugated box is environmentally friendly, and conducive to reducing resource waste. Not only does this material selection add environmental values to the whole packaging, but it also puts social responsibility at the forefront of the design philosophy.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Rooted in traditional Chinese culture, Shede Spirits and Weiqi are the two gems of Chinese wisdom shining over years. The goal set for this design is to promote Oriental culture and appeal consumers to protect and experience the quintessence of Chinese culture. Moreover, this packaging design reveals the intrinsic association between Shede Spirits and Weiqi, helping upgrade this spirits product into a renowned one with profound cultural connotation whilst boosting the brand development strategy.
CHALLENGE: To externalize the cultural combo of Weiqi and spirits, this packaging sheds the stereotypical forms on the market. The spirits bottles, creatively modeled after black and white Weiqi stones, exude an air of Oriental elegance. The complimentary Weiqi stone bowls and Weiqi board add some playability to the box, allowing users to play Weiqi while enjoying the prime spirits. This approach offers users an emotionally interactive experience, which will in turn deepen their impression of the brand.
