DESIGN NAME: Farol
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ceiling Light
INSPIRATION: Created by Trick's lead designer Katia Martins, Farol keeps the brand's minimalist language whilst taking a new take on heritage. Being Portugal such an historical country for the exploration of cork material, the concept behind Farol is to explore that heritage, where the upper part of the lamp is machined in cork, into a smooth truncated cone, keeping the same shaping as the spun steel parts. The lamp's silhouette brings back the inverted diamond shape, a signature of Katia's minimalist work.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Farol is a ceiling lamp with defined geometric shapes and solid neutral colours, combining the natural shade of cork with painted steel, in a simple and minimalist design that irradiates a soft diffuse spotlight to create a warm, cosy ambiance.
Our intent was to design a lamp that would make a statement even without being in use, through the combination of materials and a bold structure especially when you combine several of them together, creating a stronger visual impact.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Open the cubic packaging by removing the bio-adhesive. Inside, remover the raw paper wrap to unveil the Farol lamp in all it's glory. Lift the ceiling lamp by the cord, fully removing it from the box. On top of the conical shaping, Farol comes with a 1m cable and a full installation kit, whether it's meant to go into a rosetta cup or another fixing. The power-saving bulb is already installed, and the user only has to attach the electrical components in order to Farol to start its beam.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Developed between 2018 and 2021, prototyped and executed into its full range in 2022, Farol ceiling lamp has been one of the signature designs of both Trick Design Ltd and Katia Martins. The iconic minimal shape started to appear in Katia's work around 2012, and a full aluminium set was originally ideated and tested in 2015, but over the years redesigned into a product that can fully guarantee its ecological and sustainable approach, becoming a highlight of the brand's environmental efforts.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Based on stainless steel metal spun and cork lathe machining, Farol is a lamp that brings out traditional techniques, handmade components, and an excellent craftsmanship, merged into a minimalist design that associate two main components with a standard 'sandwich screw' bulb system, where the two main parts are linked together by sheer pressure of the screw thread, without any additional fixing nor glues.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: A fully eco-friendly product, made only with recyclable components, from the light system, to the packaging itself, developed with sustainability in mind, combining kraft board, paper and bio-adhesive to close the box.
Every detail on Farol lamp has been thought through in order to provide a solution that is aesthetically pleasing, with a contemporary design, but ultimately fully respects the environment and future materials being used, whether it's cork or the textile cord.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A continuous search for the ultimate materials and ways of considering and improving the environmental questions and issues around product design, Farol's research was a continuous R&D process in order to achieve a seamless, perfectly aligned execution, feasible as a whole SKU, and yet keeping the shaping and look and feel that the brand has showcased over the years, using inverted diamond shapes, clean extruded geometries and smooth textures and finishes.
CHALLENGE: Minimalism to the core of the entire design process and methodology behind Farol. Its shaping, shelled as two inverted deep funnels, required very specific techniques and great craftsmanship in order to achieve a seamless solution, where normally it would have been produced in several layers glued together. Our challenge was to contradict that premise, by creating the deep shapes into a single conformation method, keeping the environment in mind.
