| DESIGN NAME: Kukuk Box PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobile Playground INSPIRATION: It all started with the desire to invent an aesthetic temporary playground to make urban open spaces usable for children. For temporary use, foundations could not be used, the playground had to be mobile. The result is this clever concept of a playground container. Its flexibility not only saves time and money - thanks to its quick assembly, it also offers the possibility of inspiring a different audience at a new location. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: KuKuk Box is a new category of exceptional public playgrounds for children. Made of shipping containers and natural wood, it creates a magical space that invites children to climb, swing, jump and balance. The new look is a perfect combination of industrial design and traditional wood craftsmanship that brings fun and joy to a new generation - mobile and trendy! OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Brought by a truck, folded out, swiveled and put into position, and the new playground is ready! Containers are standardized. This has many advantages, which we use for our play container. Cheap shipping costs, then enormous cost savings such as long planning processes and production times. And the expense of excavation and foundations are completely eliminated. And the children? They love it from the first sight! Our play container magically attracts children, because a container has the image of something forbidden and dangerous - now they can storm it as a unique and trendy play facility. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: First designs were drawn in December 2021 in Vancouver, Canada. The final design and start of productions was in March 2022 and the setup of the play facility was April 25th, 2022, in Wolfsburg, Germany. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We’re totally committed to sustainability. We considered the repurposing of shipping containers and the use of high quality materials that are as natural as possible, to be part of the sustainable use of resources. We used components like corten steel for the standardized containers, European sourced sapwood free robinia wood, an extremely robust, tough, flexible and elastic wood that is ideal for outdoor playground construction, extremely strong Hercules rope, stainless steel fasteners such as screws, threaded rods, washers, nuts, etc. for long durability and high quality, colored plexiglass for an intense color experience. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Overall dimension: 16.650 x 16.100 x 4.150 mm Dimensions of containers: 6.058 x 2.438 x 2.591 mm TAGS: Mobile Playground, Playground Container, Container Playground, Shipping Container, Child, Children, Standard, Spielcontainer, Popup, Temporary, KuKuk Box RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Building a playground out of a ISO 668 shipping container is a complex task. Not only that two totally different types of materials need to be matched (wood and metal react with each other). The construction of playgrounds is subject to strict standards and specifications for safety requirements (e.g. EN 1176, EN 1177, DIN 18034 etc.). At the same time there are strict standards for transporting containers by the International Convention for Save Containers (SCS). In our case, the result is a certified, safe playground facility that is heavily used by the public in a central city shopping area. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the project was to aline contrary standards of an industrial product with strict norms for a save children's environment into a sophisticated, innovative and inexpensive playground structure that combines sustainability and functionality with pleasing aesthetics.
