DESIGN NAME: Resolution
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lounge Chair
INSPIRATION: During my childhood, my parents owned a lounge chair that, despite its lack of extravagance, held a distinct significance for me as it provided an unparalleled sense of comfort due to its size and coziness.
The endeavor of creating a chair that evokes the sensation of a warm embrace from one's childhood has been my inspiration. While the chair that belonged to my parents was bulky, my focus in designing a chair lies in its portability and durability. In pursuit of this objective, I have been conceptualizing designs through sketches and experimenting with various materials. Subsequently, I utilized clay as a medium to refine the shape that resonated with my vision. Ultimately, through a process of iteration and exploration, I was able to develop the form of the chair independently.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Resolution is a lounge chair that I designed in my junior year in college. The unique part about the chair is the size in comparison to the weight, and the overall design.
The chair was able to hold a person freely given that it's made of cardboard mainly. More importantly, even if this was made of wood, not only it will hold heavier weight, but the chair itself won't be heavy at all.
The chair/design of the chair is something I haven't seen before and there're many ways you can use it.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Resolution lounge chair is meant for use in any space. It's light enough to be placed anywhere by individuals. The minimalism design makes it suitable for various design concepts.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2021 at State Collee and finished in March 2022 at State College.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I had a idea to design a chair since 2020, and I've been thinking what's the best material meanwhile sketching the shape of it. I was able to decided that I want it to be light weight and hold at least 200 pounds of weight. I finally decided to make it in cardboard first, so I started to focus on the design.
I have access to clay back then so I just grabed a piece and started use a wooden tool to play with the clay. Unexpectedly, I was able to make something I like with the first try. Then, I scaned the clay piece with 3D canning software and I made adjustments on 3D software called blender. To the point that this can have multiple plain areas, I use CNC machine to cut this into pieces and I assembled it later on.
CHALLENGE: Building the structure was definitely one of the hardest parts of this process. I have to make sure that the chair can hold maximum weight with minimal structural weight. Production can be challenging since this can be hard for mass production.
