DESIGN NAME: Ideenzug City Virtual Walkthrough
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Concept Train Interactive Tour
INSPIRATION: We wanted to create an accessible experience of the train for those that couldn't attend the live presentation. Something that brought the train concepts to life and gave the viewer a real feeling of the space use and transitions. Alongside this goal was the idea to transport the viewer to a real world reality where they could experience the views and light from that environment. The complex nature of the build meant multiple teams needed to align simultaneously for this project to be realised.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project demonstrates the use of high-resolution images captured via panoramic technique then stitched to produce a high quality file that was used for a VR tour integration. Manipulated to present two different viewer experiences, the user navigates the virtual world discovering day/night views and interactive elements within the scenes.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is an interactive online tour that can be experienced on computers, laptops and devices. The user has directional control of the camera and can click icons for environment switching, layout changes and videos of mechanisms. A floor map is available for location mapping.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Ideenzug City project was started in 2020, then presented to the train industry in Germany during 2022, culminating in the International showcasing at Innotrans 2022, in Berlin, Germany.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Several projects have previously been realised within this virtual and augmented environment, both with CAD and photographic (sometimes a composited of both) design. Versions have included headsets and various navigational techniques. This current online version provides access to the core functionality to a wide audience.
CHALLENGE: As the train is a concept build, the main challenge was to bring all the elements together that incorporated the final design and functionality of the train to make the photoshoot. All lighting, materials, components and mechanisms. Ultimately, capture was made overnight at the Innotrans trade fair in Berlin in the last hours before going live. Due to the environment reflections, remote camera triggering and extensive editing out of hardware was needed to bring the tour to life.
