PRIMARY FUNCTION: Adjustable Football Goal
INSPIRATION: While living in the UK, Tom struggled to find long lasting, easy to assemble goals as well as inconsistency in the recommended goal sizes for different aged children. After 4 years of research, design, development, and testing, Telescopicgoal was created, ensuring a high quality, adjustable goal capable of 35 different sizes and therefore able to adapt to any age or skill level. Designed to utilise space and grow alongside your children, Telescopicgoal’s makes football accessible for everyone.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Telescopicgoal is a football goal that can be adjusted to 35 sizes ranging from 2m to 5m wide and 1m to 2m high, making them suitable for players of all ages and skill levels. One of the key strengths of telescopic goals is the meticulous engineering design that gives the goals such versatility, allowing them to be folded down into just 4 pieces and stored in an easily transported wheelie bag. Made from weather resistant aluminium that balances strength and portability while guaranteeing long-lasting life Telescopicgoal come in 1 of 3 models; the T1 and T2 for soft grounds, and the T3 suitable for any surface.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The height can be adjusted by a spring clip due to the potential load of the crossbar. As there is less load on the crossbar friction locking clamps were used. The net is in 2 parts with the right side net separate from the main net. The width of the goal is set by loops with printed dimensions on the top of the net which carabiners connect to. The rest of the net is connected to the frame with coloured carabiners that match coloured loops, ensuring the net can be easily connected.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started the research in October 2018 in the UK and launched the website in New Zealand in November 2022 selling Telescopicgoals.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The posts and crossbar are made from aluminium tubing and are circa 68mm in diameter, designed to replicate that match day feel of the ball hitting and bouncing off the frame of the goal. It also increases the strength for both ball impacts and safety with children hanging on the crossbar. The other aluminium tubing has been made smaller which reduces the weight of the goal and minimizes costs. The aluminium extruded tubing has plastic sleeves on the inside to stop the smaller tube extending too far.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Telescopicgoal can be set up to 35 different sizes. The largest size Width 5000mm x Depth 1600mm x Height 2000mm. The smallest size Width 2000mm x Depth 800mm x Height 1000mm. The Telescopicgoal folds down into a Wheelie Bag size Width 1150mm x Depth 400mm x Height 200mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: One of the first steps in researching was to read the international standards BS 8461:2005, BS 8462:2005 and EN16579. Based on these standards the net support was fixed at 800mm from the top post and the base depth at 80% of the height of the goal. To allow the net to be used at different goal sizes the angle of the back stanchion was fixed at 68 degrees and remains at this angle independent of the height. The diameter of the crossbar meets and surpasses the required 300N vertical load test.
CHALLENGE: The initial design used plastic, but after testing the prototype was deemed too weak. Further market research was undertaken resulting in a modular offering all upgradeable parts, giving the consumer the choice of 3 Telescopicgoals T1, T2 and T3 which all can be adjusted to 35 different sizes. The T1 and T2 use a spike in the ground with the T1 having a fabric cross bar and the T2 an aluminium crossbar. With T1 and T2 limited to soft grounds the T3 with full frame can be used on all surfaces.
