DESIGN NAME: Global Vision at Nuit Blanche
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lighting Art Installation
INSPIRATION: Our team consists of immigrants who moved from Europe to North America. The theme of the festival is very close to us and we decided to show the change of hemispheres by immigrants in the form of the intersection of semicircles and the creation of a large eye in the top view.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This monumental eye-shaped light installation allows you to walk through a colourful labyrinth which "sheds light" on the challenges of immigration. Global Vision is an artistic light installation which embodies the theme of immigration from Europe and Asia to North America. Immigration changes the way we see the world, culture, and society. Immigrants are inevitably changed by their new environment and the people they meet.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The installation is a labyrinth of triangular prisms. People had the opportunity to walk among the changing light pillars and find themselves in another organized space, just like an immigrant gets into a new life and environment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2022 in Toronto and finished in September 2022, and was exhibited in North York (Toronto) for one night 1-2 October 2022. https://www.toronto.ca/explore-enjoy/festivals-eve

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Global Vision is an artistic light installation which embodies the theme of immigration from Europe and Asia to North America. Immigration changes the way we see the world, culture, and society. Immigrants are changed by their new environment and the people they meet. When you view the installation from above, you will see a giant eye formed by the intersection of two semicircles which represent the East and West hemispheres on Earth.
CHALLENGE: The eye’s pupil, or central point, symbolizes a place for new life and the changing lights represent the many changes immigrants experience in their new homeland. Each triangular prism in the structure is linked to one another, similar to the connection we share with everyone within our society. These prisms are decorated with transparent vinyl and metallic tape which diffuse and reflect light. The use of these materials reinforces the idea of the intersection of human destinies which, in turn, is reflected in our culture.
