DESIGN NAME: Satoro
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Small Satellites
INSPIRATION: In a field dominated by digital renderings, RedPeak and Satoro wanted to capture the ephemeral essence of a small sat before its final destination in orbit. Inspired by the potential of small sats to redefine possibilities in space, the photographs play with contrasts in lighting, and proportions, spotlighting the possibilities of this small yet empowering technology.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: RedPeak and Satoro realized a series of photographs that play with colors, proportions, and compositions to create dramatic and striking images that highlight the innovative nature of the product. White backgrounds showcase the design intricacies while the framing creates a sense of weight and presence, with compositions ranging from close-ups that reveal the details of the product to wide-angle shots that capture the entire engineering feat.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Satellite photography for digital and print applications.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Two-day shooting in Taipei.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Photography and Photo Manipulation Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Equipped with a powerful Nikon D850 camera and two lenses: a Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 and a Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8, and aided by the advanced lighting capabilities of the Profoto Pro-11 with ProHead Plus, this unique photographic experiment captures the stunning contrast and interplay of light and shadow surrounding the satellite.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Produced several works in different sizes for application on different uses.
TAGS: Photography, Satellite, Space, Aerospace
RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The photographs reveal the raw and captivating intricacies of the satellite and its patterns as light dances across its gleaming metal surfaces. In this way, this project spotlights the incredible feats of technology humanity is capable of and demystifies the mysteries of space.
CHALLENGE: To reveal the satellite’s technical marvel while facing the constraints of working with an invaluable piece of technology. The precious nature of the technology, combined with various types of reflective materials, presented challenges when lighting the surfaces. How might the team highlight the intricate technical details of a “not-an-everyday" object from various perspectives?
