| DESIGN NAME: Gaze PRIMARY FUNCTION: Security Gadget INSPIRATION: There are situations in life where people have to leave their personal belongings unattended for a period, be it a restroom break in the café, playing basketball or enjoying time at the beach. This is when our valuable belongings are most vulnerable to theft. I have been a victim of theft and would like to do something about this. Gaze is designed to prevent theft from happening, scare away thieves when theft is taking place, and assist in prosecution should the worst-case scenario happen. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Gaze is a small portable security gadget created to guard users’ belongings. In addition to its sleek cyber appearance, it is designed to emerge into people’s everyday lives with a simple and user-friendly interface. It is equipped with an FHD 200-degree fisheye camera lens that records the movement of its surroundings. Gaze is protected by an innovative digital lock and a vibration sensor alarm system, which will alert the user and people nearby when abnormal movement is detected. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Simply place Gaze on the table or floor to safeguard users’ belongings. After turning on the device for video recording, the vibration detection and the smart digital lock will also be activated; the password is required to turn off the device. Unless someone successfully turns off the device, it will continue recording until out of battery. Users can operate Gaze and unlock it by pressing the panel button. Alternatively, users can remotely control Gaze via the mobile phone app. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in Nov 2020 in Hong Kong. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Gaze uses injection moulding for production with its main body composed of ABS and PC to enhance durability. Its' top layer is formed of PMMA with in-mould decoration. Hot runner technology is used in the moulding process. The material of the main body is 100% recyclable and eco-friendly plastic. The logo is engraved on the main body. Snap-fit and screw are used instead of glue for the assembly method. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 1. Battery & Charging: Built-in Lithium Ion Battery, USB-C, Pogo-pin Charging 6. Wifi Enabled: GAZE’s Mobile Phone APP TAGS: Alarm, Fisheye, 360, Camera, Security, Guardian, Gadget, Accessor, App RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The team conducted market research to find a similar product in the market with no success. Theft-related crime statistics from around the world are then collected to evaluate the imminence of developing this product. In the U.S., over 5 million larceny theft is recorded in 2019 per FBI data. Theft is characterized by a low clearance rate and high evidential difficulties. Less than 6% of recorded theft offences are charged, and no suspect could be identified for over 74% of the cases per UK ONS data. Victims mostly lost their wallets, laptop or entire bag in risky locations such as café, restaurants and bars. Apart from monetary loss, statistics by UK ONS showed the majority of the victims felt annoyed, angry and shocked by their negative emotional impact. We hope Gaze can bring a positive social impact to society by promoting a sense of justice and bringing people together. While Gaze cannot physically stop or catch thieves, strangers sitting next to you can when they hear Gaze’s alert. CHALLENGE: The team had to choose the right balance between camera coverage and level of distortion due to the fisheye nature of a wide-degree lens, such that perpetrators can be clearly identified. Programming theft alerts and smart digital lock systems is also challenging, as we aim to minimize false alerts to reduce unnecessary embarrassment. The trade-off between battery life and the size of the device was also considered. Production viability – we want Gaze to be an affordable product; considering there is no identical product in the market, we bear the risk of unfavourable market acceptance. The Frage team is developing an app that provides dedicated functions for cameras launched by their brand, enriching product usage and user experience. The dedicated app enables every camera the brand launches in the future to have platform support and share resources. At the same time, different photography enthusiasts can be linked into groups through this platform to form their brand's own community. |
