DESIGN NAME: Dihedral
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: The Dihedral chair is heavily influenced by mid-century modern styles to create an aesthetically clean look, while simultaneously merging geometric shapes to create a structural and practical design. The base shape of the Dihedral chair is inspired by hexagons, which can often be found in nature and can be used to build strong and regular structures.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Dihedral chair is composed of striking geometric shapes with multiple symmetrical components that gives it a bold shape and sticks out to the human eye. Following form and function, the lounge chair simultaneously embraces it’s regular and irregular hexagonal design to support the seat and back rest.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Due to the choice of materials the chair is designed for indoor use only and is not suitable for wet and humid conditions outside. The selected material is very moisture absorbent and direct contact with water should be avoided to extend its life cycle
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2023 in Houston, TX, USA and finished in February 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The choice of materials were selected purposefully to create a high contrast that displays its unique design, while also considering its economic and sustainability impacts. The chair is constructed from solid rubberwood with walnut brown finish, and is upholstered in faux leather and padded with foam.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The initial goal of the Dihedral chair was to create a simplistic yet elegant design based off of the hexagon, which is one of nature's strongest shapes. The initial research was an iterative process that focused on symmetry, form, and pushing the essence of what makes a lounge chair. The process consisted of free sketches, real scale modeling, and 3D printing.
CHALLENGE: Finding a solution to merge some of the regular and concave hexagonal shapes without compromising comfort and aesthetics was a sure feat in complexity. I had to explore the necessary cutting requirements for wood milling as there are a number of simple, yet complex geometries with merging the left, right, and back leg with the seat frame.
