DESIGN NAME: 75ft Explorer
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sailing Yacht
INSPIRATION: The sea is the last bit on earth where you can experience real freedom, was the main idea which has been followed on this design. Where the exterior styling should reflect in a way the rough and harsh environment which will experience the yacht in its operational life, yet it should be elegant and timeless with well- balanced proportions, but really functional. On the other hand the interior should give you the warmness and cosiness and a feeling of protection when you are going in the areas where you will have to face rough conditions.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The yacht was designed for a very experienced owner, who wants to go with the yacht to every place on the earth. In other words, the yacht is designed for a temperature range from -15° C to 40° C, and will sail from the Mediterranean sea, over the Atlantic up north, even up that Alaska. A lot of development went into the seaworthiness of the yacht, and special care has been taken that the crew is well-protected, either outside in the cockpit, as well inside from the cold temperatures which the yacht will face during her journeys. For this the yacht features a special rigid sprayhood. To reduce emissions, lot of development went into the yacht's fully hybrid propulsion system, as the boat will be operated also in environmentally protected areas.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The cockpit is designed with a well-protected area, especially for sailing long offshore passages during night. The navigation area is located close to the companionway in order that the watch captain is quickly at the steering area and can interfere if needed. the yacht can be steered also from the navigation area with a joystick. All winches for the sail control are grouped beside or in front of the steering wheels, in order that the helmsman can sail the yacht alone from the steering area once the sails are hoisted.
As the owner will stay on board for long periods, the yacht features also an office area where he can do his day to day business.
The yacht meets all requirements for the ISO standards, to withstand also high waves on the oceans and is classified for operating on the open sea without any limits.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The concept design started in summer 2019, preliminary design was finalised 2022, and the project is now ready for building.
The boat yard will be chosen by the owner before May 2023

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: - 10 different hull shapes were studied to optimise the boat for high stability and good seaworthiness
- a detailed weight estimate was made, from which areas of weight savings could have been established and further weight reduction was achieved by using carbon in the hull, deck and structures.
- detailed studies were carried out how the boat can be handled in cold climate, and which protection are needed to sail in temperatures below zero
- performance parameters were optimised for the wind and sea conditions which are expected on the open sea
- test are currently made for the sail material if it withstands temperatures below zero
- further studies of the deck layout and deck ergonomics were carried out to optimise the yacht also when used by a small crew
- a special tender launching and loading system was to developed in order that the tender can be operated by one person only.
- studies were made in order that boat can dryfall in areas with big tidal ranges
CHALLENGE: The fact that the yacht will be operated by temperatures below zero, and icing could therefore be an issue.
This has imposed certain design limits which had to be solved in the overall aesthetics.
