DESIGN NAME: Co-Grain
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bird Feeder Cereal Pack
INSPIRATION: We found that we would stock up on grains at home that we couldn't finish within their shelf life. While disposing of these wasted grains, I saw some birds eating the grains I had discarded, and I began to think about how difficult it is for birds to forage for food in the city in an era of rapid urbanization. Can we humans share the grains with the birds so that we can reduce the waste of grains, protect the birds and help them forage for food.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Co-Grain is an innovative cereal package. We wanted to give a new possibility to the package. When people buy the cereal and come home, if they can't finish it within the expiration date, they can transform the package into a simple bird feeder by following the instructions in the instructions and place it in a wooded area near your home, a park, or other places frequented by birds to provide them with some of your leftover cereal.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This product is divided into internal and external structure, through a simple deformation of the cereal box into a bird feeder, to complete the conversion of cereal packaging to bird feeders requires a total of four steps: 1. pull open the tear ring at the top of the package to form a lanyard part hanging on the tree 2. tear the bottom of the cereal package along the dotted line detachable part, and snap out the bottom of the empty space 3. insert the bottom bracket into the groove to form a bird feeding standing 4. Finally, tear open the inner tear to provide a feeding opening for the birds.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Hangzhou on January 2, 2023 and the research was conducted in Hangzhou on January 4, 2023 and ended in Hangzhou on January 17, 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Co-Grain is a cardboard made of high-strength kraft paper, printed with packaging patterns and text, coated on the surface, then cut into sheets by die-cutting machines, followed by gluing and forming and pressing, and finally assembled into a complete grain package by adding the appropriate amount of grain and sealing it according to the quantity.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We conducted extensive research on household cereal purchases and waste, the impact of urbanization on birds, and the coexistence of humans and urban birds. Through user interviews, user profiling, user journey maps and other design tools, we identified a design direction to use cereal packaging to address human cereal waste and promote urban bird survival. Our solution is Co-Grain, a cereal package that doubles as a bird feeder, promoting cereal sharing and coexistence between humans and birds.
CHALLENGE: During the design of the package, we found it difficult to satisfy the need to combine the structure of the bird feeder with the cereal package without increasing the cost of the cereal package. It was a big challenge for us to implement a platform for the birds to stand in the structure of the cereal package.
