| DESIGN NAME: Frank PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Furniture INSPIRATION: A multipurpose furniture with highly respect for the environment and sustainability. Therefore bamboo has been selected. Significant craftmandship showing in details. Assembled of 3 parts, without any fixtures. Stackable if space requires this. A aesthetic and sculptural organic form. Tolerate exposes from all angles. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Multifunctional use. The flat seat means that this piece of furniture can be used as a stool, a side table or a footstool. The principle of the design is minimalistic aesthetic in an organic design language which tolerate exposes from all angles. Assembled of 3 parts, without any fixtures, in Bamboo Extreme. And precisely bamboo is selected for its significant characteristics with respect for the environment and sustainability. And speaks for use for generations to come. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Multifunctional furniture. The flat seat means that this piece of furniture can be used as a stool, a side table or a footstool. The design is classic in a new interpretation, and in this new interpretation, the precise joinery craftsmanship, in joints from leg to seat, is an important graphic signature. And the shape of this piece of furniture has an extra bonus, it can be stacked. Bamboo is selected for its significant characteristics with respect for the environment and sustainability. The board has an incredible strength against daily wear and tear, and the furniture can handle a weight of up to a minimum of 120 kilos. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2020 in Copenhagen. After a number of sketches, I teamed up with my highly skilled woodmaker – in the development of the first prototype. It was corrected in thickness of furniture board, adjusted in dimensions of legs at the seat. Which means the furniture is a very strong construction. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Manufactured in furniture board in Bamboo Extreme. The construction has a core of cross-layered carbonized horizontal bamboo layers as well as thick top and bottom layers that give the board an incredible strength. The sizing also means that the furniture can handle a weight of up to a minimum of 120 kilos. The design combines CNC machining with classic craftsmanship. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Seat diameter 35 cm Total width 54 cm Total height 45 cm Total weight: 3.5 kg TAGS: furniture, sustainability, multifunctional, designclassic, bamboo, aesthetic, organic, environment, craftmandship, stackable RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The background for using bamboo. Bamboo is a sustainable and environmentally friendly material. The growth period is four to six years. This means that bamboo gives a quick yield. The bamboo plant sprouts new growth when it is felled – for up to eight decades. Bamboo contains natural tannins and phenols that provide antibacterial properties which withstand rot and bacterial invasion. Therefore, bamboo is interesting for production with care without using pesticides that have an environmental impact. CHALLENGE: The challenge we have with the project is whether we should go from true craftmanship to produce on a larger scale. On a larger scale, e.g. 20 to 100 copies, this means CNC cutting and assemblies adjusted accordingly. We are prepared. A full-scale prototype has been drawn, specially adjusted after full CNC cutting.
