DESIGN NAME: Milcotech
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Sale System
INSPIRATION: Milk collection in Egypt is highly fragmented, 85% from milk production comes from small farmers with less than 3 cows. Challenges are: 1. milk collection, 2. maintaining milk quality, 3. providing extension services to farmers, 4. availing finance to small farmers.
The product is designed to become a hub for financial inclusion, milk traceability, in a modular design that takes into consideration the existing workflow, the capabilities at milk collection center and stakeholder needs.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An innovative point of sale system, that includes milk quality analysis, in addition, end to end value chain traceability from the small farmer to the food processor. The solution also enables data collection and analysis for farmer relationship management, targeted extension services, de risking financing, and hence financial inclusion to small farmers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The farmer delivers the milk to the milk collection center and handover his RFID card, milk collection center weighs the milk, tests its quality, logs needed data to Milcotech, and accepts or rejects the milk accordingly.
The collector comes to receive the milk in bulk, hand over his RFID card, the milk collection center enters the milk quantity, and the milk processor's name and process the delivery of milk.
The system stores the transactions, financial, quantity, and milk quality in and out.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2021 in Egypt, Giza. The research spanned different rural geographies till concept finalization. The concept was manufactured in May 2022. Currently is being piloted in Tanta region.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Milk collection is challenging in Egypt, given the fragmentation in the production of milk with 85% coming from small farmers. To maintain quality and traceability across the value chain, innovative solutions are required. Our research was conducted using interviews, site visits, stakeholder observations, and stakeholder interviews. The research resulted in stakeholder requirements workflow analysis, potential value add, and synergies to grow Milcotech as an enabler for dairy sector development.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part in the project development is how to integrate different products with different design elements into one design. The design features graceful, elegant sweeping curves, and the appearance of the metal gives it a sophisticated aspect and a tidy appearance.
Also, it was challenging to build the design concept on the idea of modularity which allows the user to re-arrange the three parts on the desktop to fit each user`s ergonomic preference and flow.
