DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
2023 Revive Collection

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Wool Scarf

INSPIRATION:
This collection of eight scarf patterns was inspired by the circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic and global conflict. It looks optimistically to the future by telling a metaphorical tale of pre and post apocalypse with a story involving curious cellular experiments, mutation, reflection and, ultimately, reconstruction.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The scarf patterns are unique because they are created using our own digital software, mov.i.see, which uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. It enables us to create asymmetrical, non-repeat patterns that are very different from those made using traditional methods such as mirroring or repetition. Finished by hand, the patterns are digitally printed onto natural fabric which reproduces the fine detail of the designs.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
A pure wool scarf with a digitally-printed pattern which can be worn as a gender neutral fashion accessory. The unique patterns can be applied to playful, aesthetically pleasing and desirable products. The asymmetrical patterns and colour combinations mean that the scarves can be worn in different ways. The patterns are printed with ink free of heavy metals which penetrates the pure wool so that each pattern is two sided. The wool is specially treated so that it is comfortable and non-abrasive.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2022 in London and Tainan City and finished in November 2022 in Tainan City, and was first exhibited at Shoppe Object in New York City in February 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The patterns are unique because they are created with our own software, which generates a design using body movement. The colours are then adapted by the designer. These digital and analogue methods produce asymmetrical and non-repeat patterns very different from those created using traditional methods such as mirroring or rotating. We have not seen similar patterns in the fashion accessories market. Most luxury scarf pattern designers use silk whereas we digitally print onto fine wool.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 1000mm x Height 2000mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
We create unique patterns using a bespoke digital software programme which uses body movement to reconstruct digital data and reveal organic details not possible solely by programming. Inspired by the coronavirus pandemic and conflict, we aimed to create and apply new designs to a saleable commodity, pure wool scarves, that are vibrant and optimistic. Through trial and error, digital printing techniques reproduce the fine detail of the original designs yet retain the special colour combinations.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to create patterns that confront the reality of disruption in the world but remain optimistic for the future. We used storytelling to engage with the present yet create a fantastical narrative in which we relocate to an imagined planet to experience the first light of a new dawn, bringing hope for humanity. Through iteration, patterns were modified as they were created rather than allow the software to dictate the design and to reveal the authorship of the designer.
