DESIGN NAME: Zamek Na Skale
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Luxury Historical Hotel
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this project was drawn from materials related to the history and iconography of the Castle, as well as from the details of the decor revealed during the implementation process. It was inspiring to balance between the limitations resulting from the historic space, financial possibilities and the main goal being implemented, which is the sensible introduction of new functions in a specific standard, both usable and aesthetic.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project of reconstruction and interior design of the Zamek na Skale into a hotel with a high functional standard is a unique project by bringing out and emphasizing its individual historic values. The historic rooms have been preserved, the original elements of the decor have been restored, and the secondary divisions of the rooms have been removed. For the comfort of guests, a clear layout of functions and modern technical solutions has been introduced.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The historic building of Zamek na Skale dates back to the late 16th century. The body of the building is irregular, with three castle wings coming out of the quadrangle of the mansion built around the inner courtyard (roofed with a glass roof). The south-west wing of the castle, erected on a rock above the river, and on sections of the old defensive wall, with a tower from the 17th century, has the most irregular outline of the projection. After the last reconstruction and new interior design, the castle is an attractive hotel, one of the largest, located in an original historical building.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2004. Construction and conservation works started in December 2004. The hotel started operating in 2006, but design, construction and arrangement works were still carried out in the facility over the following years. In 2011, an orangery was added as a second restaurant room. Work was also carried out on the arrangement of rooms in the recesses of the castle. Recently, in April 2022, work was completed on the new arrangement of the wellness rooms located in the basements of the former castle stables.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The project of reconstruction and interior design was developed successively. First, a concept was created taking into account the conservation guidelines, showing the designed functional and spatial program as well as the color and material vision of public halls and hotel rooms. Then, the building design of the redevelopment was agreed in the offices. After the commencement of construction and conservation works, work programs, material calculations and detailed designs were prepared in advance for the following rooms.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The usable area of the Castle is 3210 m²
The hotel has 50 rooms with bathrooms, a restaurant, conference rooms and wellness facilities.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project of reconstruction and arrangement of the historic castle included many detailed studies. Reconstruction was designed in the following scope: replacement of damaged ceilings, extension of two staircases, bathrooms were designed for each hotel room. Most of the windows and doors, as well as the floors, were replaced. The internal installations were replaced. As a result, the historic Castle was adapted into a hotel, new functions and a higher standard were effectively introduced. An effective business tool was created and the life of the monument was extended for the next years.
CHALLENGE: The castle has preserved interiors with decorations from various historical periods: rooms in the style of Baroque, Art Nouveau and Neo-Rococo, and an impressive staircase in the Neo-Renaissance style. The challenge was to design renovations and ultimately use them for the needs of the hotel.
Another creative challenge was the discovery that the walls and vaults of the Castle, from the basement to the roof, are mostly made of broken stone. This was a problem in the design of the reconstruction, limiting the introduction of changes in the location of the openings and in the design of the installation.
