DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
The Nuovo

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Acoustic Violin

INSPIRATION:
The idea of making a light and ergonomic violin with developing materials and production technologies inspired the design of this violin. The tuning system and the pipes remind us of flower buds emerging from the violin's body. A leaf form inspired me to design the chinrest and pillow. A new instrument design can inspire you to play something new.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The Nuovo is an acoustic violin design. It has a different body design, sound holes, a chinrest, a pillow, and a neck design. The tuning pegs are mounting in the body of the violin. This neck design makes the violin light and easy to play. It has a transparent and durable chinrest and pillow system, which do not dampen the resonance of the violin because they do not touch the top and back plate of the violin. The voluminously designed sound holes prevent sound compression.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
It has all the functions of a standard violin. The string tuning is done with fine-tuning pegs on the top of the body. One end of the string is attached to the tuning pegs on the body section, and the other is attached to the neck section. In the neck section, the string is passed through the pipes and fixed by tightening with the allen nuts on the back of the neck. Since the string tuning settings are precise.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
This project started in June 2022 at Anadolu University Department of Musical Instrument Making and was accepted in December 2022. The research and development process is still ongoing.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The Nuovo violin is designed in a form suitable for traditional wood and bio-composites. It is made with production technologies such as 3D printing and injection moulding. All metal parts are made of titanium. Titanium has good resonance, is lightweight, and harmonises well with wood. Polycarbonate is used for the chinrest and pillow to ensure durability, lightness, and a transparent appearance.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Scale: 330 mm Length: 536 mm Width: 206 mm Body Length: 355.5 mm Upper Width: 168 mm Middle Width: 111.5 mm Lower Width: 206 mm Body Thickness: 60 mm Ribs: 30-31mm Nut: 24mm, Radius: 42mm Weight: 426gr String Spacing: 33mm (from the centre of G string to the centre of E string). The chinrest and pillow are standard sizes and have an integrated system mounted from the bottom block.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
This work is part of a research project on the search for new raw materials and hybrid production techniques in instrument making. Within the project, acoustic measurements are made and compared to new design instruments made from different raw materials. The project is ongoing. Project Owner and Designer: Ozgur Turan, Project Coordinator: Lilian Maria Tonella Tuzun, Design Advisor: Ferhan Kiziltepe, Acoustician: Emir Degirmenli.

CHALLENGE:
Developing a design while maintaining a balance between the timbre, visual aesthetics, and playability of the violin is a limited and complicated process. It was a very challenging process to make the tuning pegs work aesthetically on the body. It was a complex design problem to make a chinrest and pillow that were not connected to the violin's plates. Acoustically, it needs different sound production values than a standard violin to balance the sound holes, static and durability.
