DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Book Ing

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Bar

INSPIRATION:
The project is the second collaboration between the client and the designers. The client wants to continue the design style of the first Book ing bar, combining the characteristics of alcohol and books with classical elements and light industrial style to convey a unique luxury urban atmosphere. Book ing Bar Zhongshan is in the building next to the MRT Shuanglian Station. The client hopes that every customer who walks into the Book ing Bar will feel the relaxed and tipsy atmosphere, and be isolated from the hustle and bustle as if they are hidden in the city.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Before entering the bar, the customers have to pass through a secret door like an 'escape room'. The designers take cultural stones to decorate the fully enclosed design, and customers have to press the right trigger to open the door to the bar. This ingenious idea adds a sense of mystery and at the same time, like in the Harry Potter movie, the key object is used as a medium to trigger the magic setting and lead to another world. To achieve the open plan desired by the client, the designers install a 10-meter-long bar and plan an alcohol wall at the back to achieve a horizontal visual extension.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The bar is made of black marble, with a woodwork alcohol wall across the space. The designers plan two doors, one for storing the guests' alcohol collection and the other for preparing meals, considering both aesthetics and practicality. The other side of the space is decorated with a suede red drape on the plain wall, and LED light strips are installed below to create a sense of hierarchy, embodying the warmth and softness of luxury. In the area for serving customers, the designers arrange the sofas in a staggered manner to avoid eye contact between different customers and to form a private booth-like space.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project finished in September 2022 in Taiwan.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Building materials: woodwork, technology leather, marble, iron, cultural stone, old doors and windows, red brick, and drapery. The bar features a 10-meter-long black marble countertop and a woodworking alcohol wall that cross the space. The designers plan two mechanical doors, one for storing the guests' alcohol collection and the other for preparing meals, considering both aesthetics and practicality. The other side of the space is decorated with a suede red drape on the plain wall, and LED light strips are installed below to create a sense of hierarchy, embodying the warmth and softness of luxury.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The columns in the space are misplaced and the height of the beams is low. After reinforcing the basic structure, a light steel frame is used as part of the structural support above the bar, while the ceiling above the alcohol cabinet is mirrored to eliminate the visual defects of the height difference. In the area for serving customers, the designers arrange the sofas in a staggered manner to avoid eye contact between different customers and to form a private booth-like space. In addition to maintaining the spaciousness of the space, the designers are more attentive to creating a non-partitioned yet luxurious and private experience.

TAGS:
Modern style, old apartment renovation, marble, iron, woodwork, subtle luxury.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The designers use black marble for the bar, complemented by classical British elements such as mirrors and golden wooden alcohol cabinets. On the other side, the dark red velvet drapery with floor lighting adds layers to the space and shapes a luxurious and warm atmosphere. In the area for serving customers, the designers arrange the sofas in a staggered manner to avoid eye contact between different customers and to form a private booth-like space. In addition to maintaining the spaciousness of the space, the designers are more attentive to creating a non-partitioned yet luxurious and private experience.

CHALLENGE:
The interiors have staggered columns and low beam heights that cause visual and construction obstruction. In addition, the client wants an open-plan bar. The designers use black marble to create a 10-meter-long bar counter in the bartending area, complemented by a handcrafted woodworking alcohol cabinet in the back. On the upper part, the ceiling mirror brings the visual focus through the reflection of light and shadow, while addressing the structural defects of the building. The staggered placement of sofas and furnishings creates a private atmosphere like booths.
